Day Break at Red Hawk - a walking tour
Please join us on a tour which starts at Red Hawk Rd, goes down the gently sloping grasslands to the lake/dam, then downstream along the creek and up the steep, heavily-wooded slope (250' @ 45°) to the jeep trail along the ridge south of Lone Man Creek.

Day Break at Red Hawk.
The mist is still on the hills.
The sun peeks through the live oak motts in the grasslands up slope.
Lone Man Creek's valley is still in the shadow of the hills.
But upstream, by the lake, the sun is starting to shine through the trees...
...and reaches the Sycamores, Flame Leaf Sumac and grasses by the lake.
Finally the sun breaks free of the hills...
...and bathes the lake...
...in full mourning light...
...rising steam as the sun's rays...
...reach the dam.
Downstream of the dam,
Lone Man Creek passes an island of grass...
...then broadens before it reaches...
...the natural falls...
...and the fern grotto...
...before exiting...
...onto the flats.
In this section of Lone Man Creek flows past rocky banks...
...and native grasslands...
...of Indian Grass amongst the Lindheimer Muhly...
and Little Bluestem.
Lone Man Creek looking upstream where it flows past the bluff on the south...
...and grasses on the north bank.
Indian Grass below the bluff on the south bank...
... and by the 'rocks' (in the background).
From the bluff we see the gently sloping grasslands to the north...
...and the erosional remnant 'rocks' in the creek.
Just south of the creek, we enter the gently sloping grasslands...
...then look back north, as we traverse the woodland edge on the hills...
...above the dam...
... and just below the dam.
The dense & diverse woodland on the steep slope south of the creek...
.. is also home to ferns and mosses.
A jeep trail runs all along the ridge.
But lets get back to the dam to relax....
... while listening to the creek burble over the dam.
