Contacting Me:

Students may call me Professor or Ms. Breitenbach or do like some of my students do and simply use "Professor B" or "Ms. B" :-)

If you want to talk with me "live", visiting or phoning during office hours are the best ways to do so.

Outside of office hour times, I prefer to be reached via e-mail, and I answer e-mail messages during the semester within 24 hours, M-Th.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Having lived in Southern California for most of my life, I still consider myself new to Sacramento.

Before I began teaching, I worked for over 11 years in the field of mental health.

During those years, I worked in elementary schools, non-profit agencies, and in private practice.  Most notably, I worked as a therapist at the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic and I headed the mental health department for a Head Start agency in Los Angeles.

TEACHING & LEARNING:

Psychology is a broad field which is reflected in the courses I've taught: General Principles, Human Sexuality, Child Development, Critical Thinking, and Human Development.  I have been teaching full-time at ARC since 2002.  Prior to ARC, I taught at Napa Valley College and also at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California.

In my view, learning is a fun, active process.  I encourage my students to try something new, to be well-prepared, and to critically evaluate ideas.  I hold high standards for myself as well as for my students, and I assist my students in meeting those standards with guidance from me and support from fellow students.

Lifelong learning is something I advocate and practice.  Although I completed my formal education, I learn something new each day and I continue to take classes in pedagogy, web technologies, psychology, exercise & health, and I make time to take art classes whenever possible.
