Snowy

Finally, winter and not just plain cold.

We got our first really fun wintery day yesterday. We awoke to an average 30 cm ('bout a foot) of snow covering our yard. A huge fall of snow is a welcome site in this part of the country for a couple of reasons. The most obvious is the moisture. It will help the farmers. We haven't had a real good dump of snow for nearly five years around Saskatoon. Every time we get a substantial amount, it's like there's this sigh of relief. You can just feel it; as if some unseen tension has left the atmosphere. Maybe it's the land offering up praise to God.

The other reason we look forward to massive amounts of snow is because everyone remembers when they were kids frolicking around in snow that came up to the crotch. Some may say that it's that twisted Canadian pride that we live in a country that has such an extreme climate. But I think it's because, secretly, we love the way that it makes us all feel like were a family; like we're in this thing together. As much as we may carry on about how much snow we had to move in order to get out of the driveway, we love it all the same. I've never seen so many smiles and had so many warm hellos as when I was out (for over 2 hours) shovelling my walks. Even the pimp/gangsta who trudged past with his girl responded with a grunted, "hey..." when I looked up from my snow shovel and beamed a, "Hey there!"

The boys and I were out breaking trail in the backyard for about an hour before I started excavating my property. They've never even seen this much snow. We had a blast. To see more photos, click here .
