Mt. Magazine

Like Nebo is my favorite place to fly, Mag. is many other peoples' favorite. I would rank it as my second favorite. It is the easiest place in Arkansas to catch a thermal; The ridge is so long and so high that ridge lift can be a lot of fun; firewood is plentiful; camping is free and swimming holes are fairly close. Mark Stump, Master camper and hang-glider pilot camps and flies here a lot, especially in early July when the water is warm for swimming and the blueberries are ripe for picking.

I've had many 30+ mile flights over the years, especially back when my wife and son used to accompany me on the trips. It was possible to leave Mag. On an XC flight and fly towards my house such that my family didn't have to do any extra driving and I didn't have to go back to the mountain. Now I always have to consider the long drive back if I go XC.

Mark Stump is the Hang-gliding Representative for this site.

There are many landing fields that I land in on a regular basis and areas that I fly over  and include in my log stories. The LZ about one mile straight out from launch and the one which allows us to fly the site is Mrs. Albright's farm.  If I get up and don't have a car waiting there for me then I try to either fly east towards Havana or over the back towards the Paris airport. I don't usually go west because that would mean more driving to get home or back to launch.

If I fly east towards Havana then there are several bailout fields along the dirt road which runs on the north side of the small mountain. I usually don't try to cross over to HWY 10 until I get to the east end of that mountain. The east end of that mountain seems to be a pretty good thermal trigger point too.  If I get real close to Havana but can't make it across town to Mrs. Cherry's hay field then there is a big field just to the north of HWY 10 one and one half miles west of town. I've never landed there myself but I think it would be neat to land at the Training Hill by the Belleville airport if Tony is training there with some students.

If I fly north over the back then the closest LZ to the mountain is the Country Kitchen. From there it is north past Cove Lake to either Subiaco, the Paris Airport, or Short Mountain.
