When a heterosexual couple marries, the law grants them automatic legal protections. By contrast, even in 2002, gays and lesbians still lack the basic legal rights to make medical or financial decisions for their partner, visit their partner in the hospital, or inherit their partner's property when he or she dies. We need to have special legal documents to protect our relationships and our rights. Too many of us wait until it is too late.
We are Elisia Ross, RN, and Carrie Stone, JD, lesbian partners who are deeply committed to providing vital Estate Planning information to gays and lesbians. Instead of accepting unfair treatment as an unfortunate consequence of the homosexual lifestyle, we decided to do something about it.
In an effort to call attention to the need for legal protection, we are initiating a national Get All Your Ducks in a Row Campaign to raise the level of awareness and spark activism in the LGBT community. We hope to encourage and inspire gays and lesbians to take the necessary steps to protect their relationships and their rights.
To kick off our campaign, we are taking our show on the road. In March 2003, we will begin a cross country bicycle trip from Florida to California on a Rainbow Ride Across America !
