Liam Neeson. He has moved effortlessly from dramas like Schindlers list to
comedies like Love Actually and even mega block busters including Starwars
Episode 1. Well his latest movie is the eagerly anticipated Batman Begins. Liam
Neeson, good
morning.
Liam
Hi
Ann
Ann
The
movie's wonderful. Congratulations.
Liam
Thank
you, thank you.
Ann
It
turned out so very
nicely.
Liam
It
did, yeah, I was very, very.. I was kinda knocked out by it actually.
Ann
So
was I. A lot of people were. Look at this, look at this review from a Hollywood
reporter. For director Christopher Nolan to turn Batman Begins into such a
smart, gritty brooding, visceral experience is astonishing. Truly batman does
begin
again.
Liam
Oh
that’s
great.
Ann
Yeah,
but when someone came to you and said they wanted you to do a Batman movie, what
was your first
reaction?
Liam
It
was I have to admit a little bit reticent, um, not least because as a child
growing up in Ireland he wasn’t my
hero.
Ann
Oh
really, who was?
Liam
I
have to say it was Superman. This was my guy, you know. I found Batman just a
little bit, uh, scary
Ann
In
the past Batman movies have not been that well
received.
Liam
Well
I think the last two were kind of strange you know, lost touch I think. Lost a
bit of direction but in this one it was uh. My reticent was put to bed on it
when I read the script because it really was.. I really believed. My gosh now I
know how this guy Bruce Wayne would end up dressing up in this strange, funky
costume and climbing over buildings. The script really.. and the film really
delivers as to how and why that
happens.
Ann
His
story how a normal guy becomes I guess quote, unquote "A super
hero…"
Liam
Normal
albeit very, very rich of course.
Ann
Very rich and somewhat disturbed and you first
encounter him when he’s actually in a Bhutanese prison. So lets take a
look at that
clip
Liam
Right
<Film

Bruce
Wayne
Who are you?
Ducard
My name is merely Ducard, but I speak for
Ra’s Al Ghul, a man greatly feared by the criminal
underworld.
Bruce
Wayne
Vigilantes.
Ducard
No, no, no, a vigilante is just a man lost in
his scramble for his own gratification; he can be destroyed or locked
up.
But if you make yourself more than just a
man, if you devote yourself to an ideal and if they can’t stop you, then
you become something else
entirely.
Bruce
Wayne
Which
is?
Ducard
A
legend, Mr.
Wayne
Ann
You’re
so fabulous in this movie.
Liam
Oh
stop
Ann
Oh
come on and how about you’re, you’ve an
amazing…
Liam
Great lines to
say.
Ann
…
amazing fighting technique as well which I can’t believe the incredible
scène you guys did in
Iceland.
Liam
Yes,
yes
Ann
What
was, what was filming that day like. Look you’re on the ice
here.
Liam
I
know and people think that this is computer graphics, it’s not. This is
Europe’s biggest glazier, moving at a rate of 5-6 inches every day into a
frozen
pond.
Ann
Wow!
Liam
And
that pond was cracking and fissuring nearly all the time.
Ann
You’re
kidding! So you’re filming this fight scene and the ice was cracking, wow!
Liam
And
the ice was cracking and we had these ice experts. There job was purely look at
the ice all day, every day. And there were various times when we would be called
off the ice because it was just not safe and sure enough we’d get off hear
this (Liam does a wonderful interpretation of the sound of ice cracking)
Ann
Wow!
Liam
And
Christian and I would look at each other and think
OK!
Ann
We’d
better get this right on the first take (Ann laughs loudly)
Liam
Absolutely.
Ann
Lets
film this and get out of town. Um, the movie as you said addresses a lot of
things and I don’t really want to give away too much about your character,
ah, he’s a very complex person.
Liam
He’s
as Austin Powers would say, an international man of mystery.
Ann
Yes
he’s a man of mystery. Yes, he is very mysterious and the director said
they were looking for someone to play a mentor that the audience would
immediately warm to and see as trustworthy.
Liam
Yeah,
lets get the big Irish guy
right.
Ann
Yeah
the big Irish guy, yeah, the people love. Do you feel that? Do you think you
have that kind of image with film
goers?
Liam
I
can’t.. I’m not sure. I played a mentor 2-3 times so that may be
what they pick up
on.
Ann
Do
you like it? Do you like that
role?
Liam
I
do. Especially now that I’m a dad of two wonderful boys. There’s
something extraordinary about passing on information and experience to the
younger generation and
uh..
Ann
What
do the boys think of
Batman?
Liam
Well
they're just a bit too young to see
it.
Ann
Yes, they are a little bit
Liam
There
are some scenes in it that are.. I’m not going to bring them.
Ann
Well
let’s put it his way. I watched some of the scenes like this. (holds hand
in front of her face) So I can understand but it is a lovely movie, wonderful
Liam
Well
thanks
Ann
And best of luck with every
alright.
Liam
Thank
you very much.
