Robin
… he reaches even farther in his new movie, playing a martial arts master
and mentor to a young Bruce Wayne who tries to deal with his dark and painful
past in “Batman Begins”. But as with any character Liam Neeson takes
on, there is much more than meets the eye. It is quite a pleasure to sit down
and spend a little time with you,
Liam.
Liam
Thank you,
Robin.
Robin
I love the range, love this huge … there’s no typecasting
you.
Liam
No, I try and mix it up, you know, as much as I can. Films, studio films and
independent films, going back to the theater every now and again, doing your
craft in front of people every night, eight shows a week, I think, is uh …
twice on Wednesdays and twice on Saturdays
…
Robin
But we’re here to talk about “Batman Begins” which I had the
pleasure of seeing. And, uh, I was a little disappointed. I was looking for
Robin since my name is Robin. I never realized there was a prequel.
Liam
Well, Robin might appear, you know, in the not too distant future I’m
sure, either as a boy or a
girl.
Robin
Thank you, you are so open, I appreciate that. But in “Batman
begins”, this is how Bruce Wayne became Batman.
Liam
That’s right, Robin, yeah. And I think fans and certainly myself seeing
the last Batman films, as good as they were, have always had the question mark
in our heads. How and why does this very rich young man, don a black cape and a
black cowl and go about climbing over rooftops? What is that all about? How does
he do that? Why does he do that? And in this film, I think we answer that in a
wonderful kind of psychological way and a very believable
way.
Robin
Lets play the clip so they can see for
themselves.
Liam
Okay.

Ducard
My name is merely Ducard, but I speak for Ra’s Al Ghul, a man greatly
feared by the criminal
underworld.
Bruce
Wayne Vigilantes.
Ducard
No, no, no, a vigilante is just a man lost in his scramble for his own
gratification; he can be destroyed or locked
up.
Robin
When your character meets Bruce Wayne he’s at a real crossroads in his
life.
Liam
A real, real crossroads in his life, yeah, he’s lost. He’s suffering
incredible amounts of guilt, shame, confusion, moral confusion over this, uh,
the loss of his parents essentially, and, uh, I step in as this kind of man of
mystery. I spot something very, very special about Bruce Wayne and I decide to
take him under my belt and give him a training in … a physical training
and a training in morals, too, to give him a direction, to show him a way so
that he can lead his life and defeat evil and
corruption.
Robin
I want to play a clip from when the last time you were here, when you talk to
Charlie Gibson. Take a
look!
Liam
Oh dear!
<film

When you sat down I said “how
are you doing?” You said “Very well, I’m still working.
They’re still offering me parts and that’s the important
thing.”
Liam
I haven’t been found out
yet.
Robin
I haven’t been found out
yet?
Liam
Yeah. I think we all feel
that.
Robin
Well
…
Liam
Because when this profession is good, it’s great, you know. And to get
paid for something you really, genuinely love doing is … there’s
nothing better in the world. That’s the highest high you can have I
think.
Robin
You’re such a gentleman, such a gentleman. Continued success to
you.
Liam
Thanks, Robin.
