Conan (Liam Neeson), Academy nominated actor who has starred in numerous films including “Schindler’s List”, “Rob Roy”, and “Gangs of New York”. You can now see him in the new film “Kinsey” for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. I think this happened just yesterday … uh, please welcome Liam Neeson!
(music playing “Let Me Tell You About the Birds and the Bees”)
Conan I’m cheating, I have … (referring to his height)
Liam Conan, I’m sorry …
Conan Yes?
Liam As a good Irish Catholic, bouncing baby Jesus on a bungee cord …
Conan I know, I know!
Liam Everlasting fire, mate.
Conan I know. I sing a song called “I’m Gonna Go To Hell When I Die” and … uh, it’s sweeping the nation. Ah, it’s not good, it’s not good at all. You … I always forget I’ve run into you a few times, you’re …
Liam Usually at the fights.

Conan That’s right. Actually …
Liam Madison Square Garden!
Conan Yeah, that’s right. I went and saw prize fights at Madison Square Garden and we ran into each other and …
Liam A few years ago, but …
Conan You must be 6’5”.
Liam I’m 6’4” and a wee bit.
Conan Right, right, that’s why I have … 8 inches of my height is this, right here.
Liam I wish I had that.
Conan It was mayonnaise. I can rent it out for occasions … um, it’s great to have you on the show.
Liam Thank you.

Conan I wanna ask you something first before we get started on all the other questions. Just as an Irish man I wanna ask you. I grew up 100 percent Irish family hearing all these crazy expressions, and I don’t even know what they mean, and I guess they’ve been handed down. And my mother, when we misbehaved as kids, used to say, “You’d better behave, stop being a bold stump!” And I’d say, “ What the hell are you talking about?” Do you know what ‘bold stump’ means? Have you ever heard it in Ireland?
Liam I swear I haven’t.
Conan You haven’t heard it?
Liam Like b-o-l-d as in ‘bold’?
Conan B-o-l-d, you’re a being a bold stump.
Liam Right, ‘bold’ I know.
Conan Yeah, you’re being bold.
Liam ‘Bold’ being naughty.
Conan But ‘stump’?
Liam Stump …
Conan Yeah!

Liam Stump, stump …
Conan Yeah, I’ve no idea and so I’m under the impression that she was just making them up. “Stop it! You know you’re being a, you know, a corn crusted pirate!” And I’d be like, "Do you make that up?” “No, it goes way back to the old country!”
Liam Right, right.
Conan But there are funny ones. ‘Shut your gob’ means shut your mouth, right?
Liam Shut your gob, yeah!
Conan I love that; this is your gob, right?
Liam And there’s another one in Belfast when they want to say ‘how you doing’ they say, you know, it’s like ‘Bowgee!’
Conan What is that? That’s just a burp, that’s not a, that’s no one is asking you how you are doing.
Liam They say ‘Bowgee, big lad!’ – Oh, I’m doing very well, thank!
Conan Right! Well, you know what’s funny in this country? People assume that the Irish sort of speak like the lucky charm’s elves, like, “Oh, how are you doing?” (makes elf voice, high pitched) They really don’t. It’s very hard to understand real Irish speak.
Liam It’s ... well, there’s lot … like America, there’s hundreds of accents, you know.
Conan Right, right.

Liam But, uh, I’m also a wee bit peeved when I get “You’re from Ireland, right?” “Yeah!” “ Do you know John Murphy from …?”
Conan Yeah, yeah.
Liam Like Ireland is that size.
Conan Right, right.
Liam There’s 4.5 million people.
Conan Well, I get ... my last name is O’Brien and they’ll say like, "Oh, I know ... I must know someone who is related to you because I know a guy in Ireland named O’Brien!"
Liam The chances are you are probably are related.

Conan That’s 4.1 million are O’Brien as the last name. It’s just a name anybody can grab off the street and call themselves. And then there’s a good one, what is it? “You’re your mama’s blouse, no, you’re a big girl’s …
Liam You’re a big girl’s blouse.
Conan You’re a big girl’s blouse.
Liam I know.
Conan I got that one all the time.
Liam I mean what is the derivation of a big girl’s blouse I have no idea.
Conan I wore a big girl’s blouse as a child, it makes sense to me.
Liam It goes way back.
Conan It goes way back. This film ”Kinsey”, everybody’s talking about this film. And I saw it last night, uh, and electrified. I really did love this movie.
Liam Thanks, Conan.
Conan I’m curious, Kinsey …
Liam You didn’t fast forward?
Conan No, I didn’t fast forward. God, no, I didn’t fast forward through films about sex. I watch them very slowly again and again, um …

Liam Because it was all about sex.
Conan Well, no, it’s … but it’s the theme of the movie and it’s really what this man was about. Kinsey, he was …
Liam He was a sex researcher.
Conan Right, right.
Liam He, um …
Conan Well, really the first one to sort of apply scientific method to …
Liam Absolutely to, to absolutely take away love and emotion and study and, and write these phenomenal books on what we all do behind closed doors and sometimes (large intake of breath ) not behind closed doors.
Conan I leave, I leave the door open, yes …
Liam And suddenly they became huge.
Conan … (and yell) look what I’m doing.
Liam Huge bestsellers.

Conan Well, this raises the question for me. How did you learn about sex growing up? Did your parents have the talk with you? How did it work?
Liam No, didn’t have a talk, but, uh, I have to say it was bathroom walls, toilet walls.
Conan Right, do you think that’s how we all …( bursts into laughter at Liam)
Liam Oh, I get it, I get it.
Conan Oh, that’s how it works. Because I know that in an Irish family, they don’t talk about these things.
Liam They don’t talk about it and we didn’t talk about it at school.
Conan Right.
Liam And, uh, I remember when I started seriously courting at the age of 24 …
Conan You waited till you were 24?

Liam About 23, 24 going to a dance in Belfast and fancying this girl and wondering how I could buy her a lemonade.
Conan Right.
Liam Seriously, I’m not exaggerating.
Conan Is this 1885? “May I buy you a lemonade? There you go!” It was simple, yeah, but … I know what it’s like. I know …
Liam But I’ll tell you what she said and I have to tell you because it’s … and it’s gospel truth. We were dancing away and I thought I had to ask her, you know, you know, “Do you wanna come over and sit?” And eventually she read my thoughts and said, “Do you mind sitting down? Your feet are killing me.”
Conan You learn, you learn like … was also the sarcasm too, just take you out. So, your weren’t confident with girls.
Liam Still am not.
Conan Still am not? Oh, come on, you’re Liam Neeson. This is huge.
Liam Ah, you’d be surprised.
Conan Really ... no, I wouldn’t be. I … anyway, moving on.
Liam Right along.

Conan I was sure fame would change things, but, no. Right now it’s Christmas time. How do you celebrate Christmas in your family?
Liam Well, traditionally... my wife’s a fantastic cook, and thankfully she’s on her way back from Shanghai tonight. She was making a movie out there, so she should be arriving about midnight.
Conan Well, that was half an our ago.
Liam But very traditionally, I dress up as Santa. Two little boys, 8 and 9 years of age … I think this year I ...
Conan You dress up as Santa?
Liam Oh, yeah, but I do it kinda quite subtly. I’m outside. It’s Christmas Eve about five o’clock, it’s not pitch dark, but its dark and I kinda run through the woods so they just, they just get a hint of ... a little hint redness, you know, and that’s just my face.
Conan Yeah, there’s this strange man running through the woods. That sounds scary.
Liam That Irish actor ...

Conan That’s not fooling anybody. All right, we have to get to this film. So many people are talking about this movie and I wanna discuss Kinsey. We have a clip here, but we should familiarize people a little bit in case they are not aware what this film is about.
Liam Uh, he was a starred scientist, uh, he was a professor in Indiana University in Bloomington. He was studying gall wasps, which were that size, for 20 years. And he segued into studying, uh, male and female sexuality.

Conan And it shocked people at the time because nobody had ever talked about these things openly, let alone write books about it.
Liam And, and let alone not use the words like masturbation, penis, vaginas … stuff like that.
Conan I think you should go. I really think …
Liam My wife’s back, right?
Conan I’m not matured, I can’t handle it.
Liam I should have checked with Frank. Should I say these words or not?
Conan No, no! Yes, you can. You can do whatever you want. We have a clip here from ‘Kinsey’.
Liam This is him delivering his first lecture to students about S.E.X.
Conan Yeah, at a time when … you can tell from the clip. This is taking place at the …
Liam 1938.
Conan Yeah, 1938 and this just wasn’t done. Take a look …

(Film Clip)

Conan It is a fascinating story.
Liam Very, very important part of our cultural history, you know.
Conan Yeah, and …
Liam And a very brave man.

Conan And so controversial at the time when you watch the film because, I think, one of the things so many people are used to seeing sex depicted in different movies, but there is something about this that is a bit more arresting because it’s taking place at a time when no one talked about it.
Liam Absolutely!
Conan And it’s all true.
Liam And, for all we knew, nobody did it either in those days, you know.
Conan No, they found another way. Uh, ‘Kinsey’ is in selected cities and, uh, this was a real thrill having you on. l always wanted to have you on this show. Thank you so much! Liam Neeson!
