Regis:
… playing the controversial sex researcher Alfred Kinsey back in the 40's
and 50's in a new movie called Kinsey, and here's Liam
Neeson!
Regis:
Liam
Neeson!
Kelly:
Liam
Neeson!
Liam:
Oh, here we go
again!
Kelly:
I
know.
Regis:
I love saying
it.
Liam:
You’ve still got these chairs that I never feel quite safe
in.
Regis:
Yeah, I know they're a little shaky, aren't they? I'll just say it once and
… well, get it over with
…
Liam:
Go
on!
Regis:
See, you gotta build up to it ... Liam Neeson !(much applause
)
Regis:
Congratulations!
Kelly:
(Interrupting) It's such a build-up for such a small pay-off, isn't
it?
Regis:
Congratulations on the great reviews, I hope you saw them. Had a chance to see
them this morning, they’re all
…
Liam:
I haven't; but I've heard they're
good.
Kelly:
Terrific!
Regis:
They're terrific. I'd say it was one of your best acting jobs
ever.
Liam:
Yes, of course! (said
Grandly)
Regis:
Did you feel it? Do you feel it when you're good as an actor or an actress?
Kelly:
Don't look at me, I don't
know!
Liam:
Well, you know sometimes you feel when you're on, you know, you know, when you
are connecting to an audience. You must feel that during the
week.
Regis:
Yeah, sure! But
…
Liam:
... Some shows are better than
others.
Regis:
Right, but you're connecting to another person in this case, you know, you're
getting into his…
Liam:
Yeah, well, hopefully ... oh, I see … the person you're playing! Well, I
mean, you
know…
Regis:
So you felt good about Kinsey when you were doing
him.
Liam:
I felt really good. I just thought it was a very important film to make. Umm, it
was a chance to work with Laura Linney
again.
Regis:
Again, boy, you two are a team really! A great team,
too.
Liam:
Yeah, we
are.
Regis:
What does it feel like when you keep working with someone year after
year?
Liam:
We're like an old married
couple.
Regis:
An old married couple! That’s exactly how we don't feel, but anyway…
Liam:
... Without the
sex.
Regis:
So, Liam, did you learn anything about sex doing this
movie?
Liam:
Uh, yes, I
did.
Kelly:
Anything you can tell Regis?
Liam:
Quite a
lot.
Regis:
Did you
really?
Liam:
Um, I also learnt just how, I mean, the extraordinary thing when Kinsey was
doing this research, I mean he interviewed like 18 thousand people in the 40's
and
50's...
Kelly:
Right.
Liam:
… And was struck with, particularly with the ignorance of the young, of
the youth of this country about sex, about their own sexuality. Like it was not
uncommon in the 30's, you know, for girls not to know where babies came from.
There was a big survey done in the 1940's for high school boys; like 95 percent
of them did not realise that a man was responsible for bringing a baby into the
world.
Kelly:
He is? (said naively)
(Liam says something
here)
Regis:
And you thought it was all you, didn't
ya?
Kelly:
Just a little
joke!
Liam:
It was, you know, it was staggering! He was staggered by
it.
Regis:
It was that bad
…
Liam:
Yes, it was that bad, you know, so he started the phenomenal research and
produced this data, statistics that kinda shocked
everybody.
Regis:
Oh, I bet it did! Now we're gonna pause and come back and have Liam Neeson
explains even
more…
Regis:
Liam Neeson got the new movie coming out, doing a lot of interviews with the
press and doing Saturaday Night
Live.
Kelly:
Ah!
Regis:
(It’ll) Be on tomorrow night and he's enjoying it, you know, some actors
are a little reticent about doing it because it's quite a strain, you gotta
learn all those lines but you're enjoying it, look
…
Liam:
I am enjoying it, I mean, it's been great being with a wonderful creative team,
uh, but I'm making a total jerk of myself.
Regis:
No.
Kelly:
Well …
Liam:
But, it's all
right.
Regis:
Have you done much comedy in your career, Liam
?
Liam:
No, very little No, no.
Regis:
So?
Liam:
So everybody keeps telling me I'm very funny, you should do SNL. Now that I'm
doing it I'm not so
sure.
Regis:
Well, this guy Kinsey was quite, quite a guy. Now, you must have had a lot of
research to do about
him.
Liam:
Well, I did, Regis. There’s four or five biographies written on him that
range from not very good to excellent. The Kinsey Institute for Sex Research
& Sex Gender and Reproduction, Bloomington, Indiana sent me, that Kinsey
founded 1938. They sent me a whole whack of
stuff.
Regis:
Was that a part of Indiana
university?
Liam:
Yes, it was; it is! Still
is!
Regis:
Still
is.
Liam:
Very very
vital.
Regis:
So the research
continues!
Liam:
Oh, absolutely very very
important!
Regis:
And he was happily married for many
years.
Liam:
Very happily married. I mean his marriage was his foundation stone. I mean he
could not have done this incredible research without the stability of this
marriage.
Regis:
In fact, here's a scene, tender scene from the Kinsey movie. Here you are with
Laura Linney playing your wife. Take a look at
this.
Liam:
Great!
(Film
clip)
Mac:
I think I really fell in love with you tonight… seeing you here.
Kinsey:
Do you think we can make this work,
Mac?
Mac:
I don't know. I've heard some people just don’t … fit
together.
Kinsey:
There's no one I'd rather be with.
Mac:
Physically? I mean … surely there's someone who knows.
Kinsey:
That’s it, Mac! Every problem has a solution, even this one. We just need
to talk to someone, an expert who's studied the
matter.
Mac:
What are you
doing?
Kinsey:
We still have more
time.
Regis:
Was that early on in their
marriage?
Liam:
That's early on, you know! He was 27 or 26 when he lost his virginity and
disastrously so… um, it starts from there, you
know.
Regis:
Disastrously,
eh?
Liam:
Well, they were totally, both of them, were totally ignorant of sex. They go to
a doctor and find out that it's actually a very very minor problem and it kinda
releases them, you know.
Regis:
Okay, ah, so anyway, a great review! Great reviews in the papers today. Thank
you so much, Liam. Thank you so much for being here! Liam
Neeson!
Kelly:
Good luck, tomorrow night!
