Liam's appearance on "Wogan: Now and Then" on UK TV

21st May, 2006

Helen saw this show "Wogan: Now and Then" on uktv GOLD, Liam appeared on it for about 20 minutes! Terry Wogan is an Irish radio and TV broadcaster working for the BBC. He interviewed Liam in 1990 and 1991 about his movies "The Mission " and "Ruby Cairo".

She even found an ad showing Wogan and Liam! From the Sunday Mirror newspaper:

Thanks, Helen !
Her account of the show follows, if you click on the Read more link.

She is working on a transcript now.

This is Helen 's account of Liam's 20 minutes appearance on the show:

Well here goes. Before the start titles rolled in, we saw glimpses of Terry meeting his guests backstage: Liam Neeson, Cillian Black and Jeremy Irons. You see Liam talking to Jeremy whilst having a drink and later, he gives Cilla a peck on the cheek. Then it was the photoshoot and when he is being photographed with Liam, he says “He’s very tall isn’t he?”

Then the titles roll in.

And he announces his first guest as Liam Neeson and describes him as “big now as he was back in the 90s. He was tall then” and “an Irish heartthrob”. Wogan first interviewed him back in the 90s (first in 1990 and then in 1991) - talking about him films “Ruby Cairo” and “The Mission”. Then a clip is shown of Liam on “Wogan” in 1991 when he talks about his new film at the time - “Ruby Cairo” and he talks about a scene when he has to play golf on top of a pyramid and he has never played golf in his life. Hes very cute in this clip - look very nerdy wearing glasses similar to these and wearing a blue blazer. Then Wogan shows him how to golf using a jelly baby.

And then the clip ends and he finally comes on stage looking as sexy as always! And then Wogan mentions there are jelly babies on the table but it wasn’t a hint at anything. He asks Liam if he has played golf since and Liam replies “No”. Wogan mentions that he has never seen Liam on any other talk show except for this (he obviously hasn’t seen the American ones Liam has been on then). Wogan does mention Letterman and Liam says he was once on Letterman and from his experience Letterman is terrifying and belittles his guests. Also, Jay Leno is a sweet guy but American talk shows are somewhat different to British talk shows. He is offered a jelly bean but declines with a laugh.

Wogan mentions the first meeting Liam did with Wogan and that, at the time his career is taking off and he asks have things worked out the way he wanted them to. Liam says life is very good. Since 1991, he has done Broadway, had married and is a father to two great kids and is very happy. And Wogan shows a picture of Liam in THAT shirt to which Liam laughs and he is asked where did he get that shirt from?

Liam continues saying that he's been blessed and he's done a few silly films but then Wogan praises Schindlers List and Roby and shows this picture on screen. Liam remarks that Schindlers List was wonderful an explains how he got the role:

Liam did a full camera test with Spielberg and then he forgot all about it. He was doing Anna Christie with Natasha and one night Steven, his wife (Kate Capshaw) and mum in law came backstage and Kate’s mum was teary over the play and Liam hugged her and Kate said that’s what Schindler would have done. Later, Liam got the part. Liam likes to think he got the part because of the screen test and not because of the hug.

He goes on to mention that Spielberg wants him to play Lincoln in the upcoming Lincoln film. For year, he has been reading about Lincoln and describes him as a “political poet”.

Then comes along the programme break but before that theres an outtake after the camera goes off when Wogan throws jelly babies to the audience.

Break over. Back to Liam.

Wogan calls Liam an “Irish film god” and comments that Liam has got a bad Irish accent and Liam refers to the infamous accident he had back in 2000. He describes it in detail saying it was stupid to be going on a motorcycle and he collided with a deer and he went on to the grass thinking it would help get the deer of but he ended up going down a hill and the bike crashed into a tree and split into two. He climbed up to the road side and saw a trucker and pulls out thumb saying “Excuse me sir. Could you take me home?”. The trucker saw the mess of the crash, saw Liam’s leg and rang the hospital. Paramedics came out and they were saying “Hi Mr Neeson. How you doing? Love you in such a film” etc and he was given morphine and feeling great and he had to get up at one point and give the poor paramedics directions to the hospital. Neeson described it as a “Monty Python sketch”

Next there is another clip shown of Liam on “Wogan” in 1990. It is related to the film “The Mission” with Wogan pronouncing one of the actors “De Niro” (not De Neero which is more common) and Liam mentions how Jeremy Irons once got an award for “Brideshead Revisited” presented by Wogan who got the title wrong. He said “rejuvenated” Irons got his award and said “Thank you Mr Wigan” as a joke. He’s got this look going in the clip

The clip goes off and Liam mentions “The Mission” and how he was there for 4 months and how it was a terrific experience and that he loved working in locations. He mentions that he finished his latest film, “Seraphim Falls” with Pierce Brosnan in January and Wogan says “Irish Cowboys”. Liam mentions the mountains in Mexico and it was great. Wogan asks if it involves a load of kissing in mountains. Liam mentions they should and he did mention it and it would made the film a great success and Wogan mentioned “Maybe even an Oscar” (all referring to “Brokeback Mountain”).

Wogan mentioned Liam’s success and asked what was it like working on Star Wars. Liam said that he enjoyed it but it was hard work because he had to act with no one around and not on location. Wogan also mentioned “Batman Begins” and he said it was great working on it. Then one more clip is shown showing the first appearance of Ducard up to the moment when he said “a legend, Mr Wayne”. Wogan asked about the beard he wore in Batman and Liam admitted the moustache and beard was fake.

And Liam’s interview finished with Wogan doing golfing jelly bean incident again (similar to what is shown on the 1991 clip). Then Liam says his farewells and then its Cilla Black’s turn to come on stage.
