And just like that...it's over

It seems rather unreal that today was my last day of work.

And I thought I was eating weird

Reading an article in Slate about China and (not) making money there, I was treated to a description of the kinds of foods served at a large banquet designed to impress your guests. I've often found entertainment entertaining my American friends and family with the kinds of food I've had here in Gokase, but...

House hunted

Since my last entry was about looking for a house, I shall follow up with the results of that searching. The result is...

House Hunters

Time in Gokase is growing increasingly and dangerously short. Though the good news is I have a job in Fukuoka, I don't have a house yet. Hopefully that will soon be rectified, or at least hopefully I'll have a solid idea of what's in store for my living situation.

How to get everything from the internet for free, for only $10

Since I generally only read English news, especially concerning technology issues, I'm well aware of how harshly (draconianly?) the creative content heavyweights--the likes of the RIAA and MPAA--are fighting online piracy. So imagine my surprise when I found a magazine in a bookstore here that actually tells you how to best do all that pirating!

Cool names for stuff

I'm jotting these down so I don't forget them. My first two entries are from conversations I had when I was in Tokyo the other weekend.

Farewell to Noah

A few weeks ago I made a trip up to Tokyo, this time to hang with Noah one last time.

The police come to my house

Today I had a visit from the police officer here in Gokase. No, it was nothing exciting like me being suspect in some crime, but rather a musical exchange.

Chinese is pretty hard to learn

After reading an article about a fun podcast for learning Mandarin on Slate.com, I decided to give it a shot. Since Japanese has been my only linguistic endeavor as of late, I thought I'd give another language a try. The verdict? Indeed, the podcasts are interesting and engaging, but Mandarin is hard. The best thing, though, is I can better empathize with people having trouble learning English in my own classes.

Golden Week 2006 at an end

One year ago probably this very day I was straggling home after a 10 day super-road-trip with Noah to Nagoya. We covered just about anywhere in western Japan that could have been: Shikoku, Kobe, Nara, Nagoya, Himeji, Beppu. It was a hell of a time. (Not that any of you would know because I never finished writing about it or posting pictures.) But this is 2006, and I suppose what would have been the road trip was pushed back a few weeks when my mom visited. Thus, strapped for cash, all I did was go surfing.

Mom visits Nagoya

About a month ago my mom arrived in Nagoya's brand new Central Airport for a 3 week go at Japan. For the first two weeks I travelled around with her, and we went to Nagoya, Kyoto, Kanazawa and a number of spots down here in Kyushu around Gokase. It was a very good trip, finally getting to show someone around, seeing old friends, and of course seeing my mom after eight months or so.

Discriminatory Car Security System?

"You are too close to the vehicle. Please step away," or something similar, took me quite by surprise the other day at an onsen. That's not translated; the car alarm actually said it in English. My question is, of course, why?

Apple and Windows

Warning: This entry may be of interest to only one or two people who actually read my stuff.
This week's exciting news in the Apple--scratch that--entire computer world, is this nifty new ability to run Windows XP natively on a Macintosh. Cool, I guess, but I began to wonder if Apple's opening a slippery slope by actively supporting that ability. My thoughts go back to a Macworld column I read several years ago about why Apple would never release an Intel version of OS X (which obviously just happened) because it would drive DOWN incentive to purchase Apple hardware.

Running a ski event

What could be more of a no-brainer than having a ski-based event in Gokase? I didn't figure it could be very difficult; simply offer cheap skiing and drinking and in no time a number of Miyazaki's JETs would be on board, and sure enough that's what happened. Beyond expectations the event was successful, thanks mainly to the great participants, both on the foreign and Gokase side.
