Our Strategies
The use of reusable chopsticks can be encouraged by providing both the chopsticks and the educational materials about them.
We hope to do the following:
- 1) Have chopsticks printed with the "Preserve forests... Reduce waste" message, in order to have a recognizable symbol of chopstick conservation.
- 2) Develop educational materials which connect throwaway chopsticks with the problems they entail, such as deforestation and excessive waste, and which promote conservation-minded alternatives.
- 3) Supply chopsticks and informational materials to a number of restaurants, encouraging customers to ask for reusable chopsticks. Supply the same type of package to institutions like schools and public cafeterias, or other large consumers of disposable chopsticks.
- 4) Maintain this website as a clearinghouse of information about chopsticks and their impacts on forests and landfills.
- 5) Collect used waribashi to use as educational props and materials for art projects.
- 6) Build an information booth out of used chopsticks and use it to provide chopsticks and education at outdoor events.
- 7) Develop additional programs including school programs, field studies, and research projects.
- 8) Produce additional materials including magazine articles, public service announcements and documentary films.
- 9) Continue researching the issue, including mapping ares that have been affected.
- 10) Foster international communication with environmental groups in China and elsewhere.
