Obama’s Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy
This is great:
"According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University
of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a
President who speaks English as if it were his first language."
-and-
"Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a
way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder
can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what
Americans are needing also," [Palin] said.

NEW MUSIC: Shout Out Louds
We talked about the invasion of Normandy today in "Language, Class
and Power," in the context of language change via the people who
settle there.
And now I can't get the "Shout Out Louds - Normandie" out of my head.
Enjoy:

"Terrorizing Dissent" - a new documentary about the violent suppression
of peaceful protests at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul
this past July – is now available to download. (The trailer is here.)
Am I the only one who completely missed how big of a debacle
this was? That hundreds upon hundreds of peaceful protesters
were violently arrested and tear gassed, just for being outside the
designated "protest zone?" In the film, you see a whole park full of
people minding their own business, not even holding signs or anything,
get arrested. Most egregiously, journalists with valid press
credentials
were top among those systematically prosecuted.
A sad state of our democracy indeed.
Watch the thing. {via the huffington post}

NEW MUSIC: Blind Pilot

I'm the kind of mp3-blog reader who skips the writing about the music
and cuts right to the download; eager to evaluate the track for myself.
Thus, I find it rather tricky writing comments I wouldn't read myself.
But
what the hell:
Portland's "Blind Pilot" is two guys who seem to ride their bikes a lot.
Which is not only good for the environment, but for their music, too.
Their songs are simple and quiet - ambient even - yet a strong
rhythm
underlies each one.
Ah what the hell. Just listen to it:

A New Obama site: Change.gov
Barack Obama has pledged to maintain a more transparent administration
(not that the bar's that high!), and his new transition Web site is certainly
a step in the right direction.
