"Serving Overseas"

PTE. ALBIN F. SUMARA,
N.N.S.H.


Pte. Albin Sumara enlisted with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in June, 1940, and left for Overseas July 29th, 1941, with the 3rd Division. He is a son of Frank Sumara and the late Mrs. Sumara, and was born in Joggins in 1918. A brother, John Sumara, with the Québec Engineers, is also Overseas.
   Albin is a local ball player, with a nice record as a pitcher. Beginning with Bantam baseball back in school, he has played, progressively, with the local Junior "Red Sox," the Pugwash "Maple Leafs" (intermediates) and the Senior "Fencebusters."

Well-known to sports fans throughout Nova Scotia, Private Albion "Alby!" Sumara, of Springhill, has been killed in action.
   Wounded several months ago, Albion, who hurled for several provincial baseball teams before the war, was killed November 1, according to word received by his father Frank Sumara.
   During his baseball years, Sumara pitched for the Springhill Fencebusters, Pugwash Maple Leafs and Kentville. He was rated as one of the top moundsmen while pitching for the Kentville squad in 1938, and the Fencebusters in 1939.
   Private Sumara went overseas with North Nova Scotia Highlanders.
