Mr. Laurie's Homepage
Einstein FellowDuring the 2006-2007 school year, I worked on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. in the office of Congressman Mike Honda, who represents CA's 15th District. I worked with Congressman Honda on educational and environmental policy in the end of the 109th Congress, and the beginning of the 110th. This work included contributions to the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, the Student Privacy Protection Act, H.R. 1346, and the Global Warming Education Act, H.R. 1728 (which was introduced in the Senate as the Climate Change Education Act S. 1389 by Presidential candidate Barack Obama.) During my experience as an Einstein Fellow, I had excellent opportunities to learn, research and contribute to federal policy. I also met many important scholars, researchers, and policy makers.
Former Vice President Al Gore, Luke Laurie, and Congressman Mike Honda March, 2007 Website Background:Origin:This website has existed since 2000, and over the years has evolved and grown, to become something of a monstrosity. In February of 2006, the site was rebuilt from the ground up. The site now includes some CSS code I wrote to improve the look and feel. Hopefully the new format is easier to read, easier to navigate, and more useful for day to day use, especially for myself as a teacher, and for my students. Purpose:The purpose of this site is to act as a dynamic launching point for educational content and resources. It also serves as a repository of my creative projects and research. For my students in Science classes, many classroom resources are available here, including notes, references, links, and assignments. For students working in RoboChallenge, there are RoboChallenge Rules, multimedia, and tutorials. For myself and for other teachers, there are teaching resources. Why doesn't every teacher have a website like this?Because it's not practical. Building a site like this requires hundreds of hours, and maintaining a site such as this requires a few hours every week on average, and a monetary cost of about 100 dollars a year. In addition to all of these factors, teachers need stability in order to build resources that they can count on using more than once. In the current political climate, stability is rare for teachers. Frequently teachers must change the subjects or grade levels they teach, change the curriculum to adjust to ever shifting calendars and daily schedules, and otherwise accommodate whimsical curriculum changes. Only through years of experience in special projects, and by the allowances of additional funds for my labor have I been able to justify this work for myself. Legacy:There is an extensive legacy to this website, including hundreds of student made web pages from years past, dozens of quicktime videos, and thousands of photos. Hopefully most of what was useful in the old site can still be found (try the search page). Feel free to contact me if there is something you are looking for that you can no longer find. -Luke Laurie |
