JOHNNY ONE EYE
Johnny One Eye is David’s own detective creation. John Hawke is a policeman at the outbreak of the Second World War. He enlists to fight for his country but during training a rifle explodes in his face and he loses an eye. He is invalided out of the army and offered a desk job with the police, but this too dull for Johnny so he sets up as a private detective in London.
Johnny First appeared in the short story, One for the Monet, which appeared in issue 37 of Sherlock Holmes The Detective Magazine and was subsequently published in The Mammoth Book of Comic Crime (Robinson 2002). There have been four other short stories all appearing in the Sherlock Holmes Detective Magazine/SHERLOCK:
A Damsel in This Dress Issue 41
Oh, Sister, Where Art Thou? Issue 51
It’s That Old Black Market Issue 57
Look for the Silver Lining Issue 65
The short stories are somewhat lighter in tone than the novels.
