If Linux Is the Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread, Why Can't It Do What Crappy Microsoft Software Does?
In a comment on Slashdot, Starship Trooper states:
I, for one, am somewhat miffed that while my operating system powers Hollywood blockbusters and NASA supercomputers, it still can't fully replace Windows on my office desktop.
I don't know if I agree with his assertion that developers' egos are to blame, but it's an interesting point to ponder. It probably isn't simply that Linux as a platform can't be adapted to desktop use. In the areas where Linux is being widely used (Web servers, graphics rendering, clustering, etc.), there are people for whom its being so much cheaper or more stable or more flexible than other solutions is important who are also technically capable of adapting Linux to their purposes. No such group seems to exist in the office desktop realm.

Aren't You Glad That Someone Competent Is In Control?
Now that the Bush presidency has been given a chance to make its mark on the economy, the U.S. poverty rate is going up and median household income is going down for the first time since early in Clinton's presidency. But true to form, our fearless leader isn't worried:
I'm optimistic about America in general. I mean, the American people are resilient. They're strong. We got the best workers in the world. Inflation's down. Interest rates are low.
It has been a while since I've been in a macroeconomics class, but last I knew, low inflation and low interest rates were primarily beneficial to to those with high net worth, not those in poverty. And by the way, can someone please banish the word "strong" from his vocabulary?
Over the last two decades, it has been a Democratic president that has most effectively advanced the Republican economic agenda. It was Clinton who dismantled the welfare system and it was Clinton who balanced the federal budget (an accomplishment that it took Bush less than a year to undo). Under Clinton, the rich got richer at an unprecedented rate. Did the Republicans hate him so strongly because they were jealous?
