Spilling out over the side to anyone who will listen

Is This Fair?

When I was growing up, a friend and I posited a law of averages with respect to talent which would dictate that anyone who is more gifted than average in one area would have to be less gifted than average in another area to balance it out. So attractive people would be less intelligent, bright people would be athletically challenged, etc. If so, how is one to explain Milene Domingues, Ronaldo's wife, who just transferred from Italy to Spain to follow her husband for a record transfer fee for a woman of a little over $300,000?

"Ronaldinha", as she has been dubbed by the Spanish media, is rated as one of the best female footballers in Europe.
The ex-model also holds the record for ball juggling, keeping a football off the ground with 55,197 touches.

As a point of reference, the maximum salary for men in Major League Soccer is believed to be about half of her $300,000 transfer fee. How likely is it that their children will play football?

What Are the Odds of That?

I dread the forwarded e-mails that I'm going to be receiving in the wake of Patriot Day. With everybody paying such close attention to every little thing yesterday, there were bound to be all sorts of coincidences that will be misconstrued as meaningful.

Debris was blown from the still under construction AOL Time Warner Center (two fifty-story towers, coincidentally) by the high winds in New York yesterday. Keith Olbermann chose to read it as a timely reminder of events in New York a year ago. Personally, I would choose to see it as an excellent metaphor for the whole misguided merger between AOL and Time Warner as it meets the forces of reality, with improperly secured pieces injuring innocent bystanders.

More uncannily, the New York Lottery numbers for yesterday were 9-1-1. (Insert eerie theremin sound effects here.) I shudder to think how that's going to be interpreted, but I find it hard to believe that divine prophecy would be revealed through a form of gambling that has the added distinction of serving as a regressive tax.
