What is Gnosis?
Gnosis essentially means knowledge, or as Harold Bloom would have it, knowing. In this sense, it is not knowing in the way that one knows the answer to two plus two. Rather it is knowing something that cannot be demonstrated or proved, but is nonetheless knowable--as, for instance, one might know the eternal piece of themselves that both predates and will survive this creation.
As such, the term gnosis is most often used in a religious context. But I think that Harold Bloom has been convincing in applying the term to poetry and literary theory. And in the process, he has helped me to see literature as religion.
What does any of this have to do with a Weblog? I dunno. We'll see I guess.
