Back to normal?

In the midst of some of the heaviest fighting since the end of major combat last year, the American public is being assured that most of Falluja is "returning to normal."

FALLUJA, IRAQ (MM) -- The past 48 hours have seen some of the most intense fighting in Iraq since the end of major combat was declared last year by President Bush. Among the hot spots seeing recent conflict is Falluja, where by some accounts 600 Iraqis have perished in gun battles between coalition forces and Sunni insurgent forces.

Last night, coalition ground troops engaged the opposition with the support of attack helicopters, F-16s and at least one AC-130 gunship, one of the deadliest machines in the coalition arsenal. It comes as some surprise, then, to hear President Bush tell reporters today that "most of Falluja is returning to normal." I'm very curious to learn how a city no larger than Toledo can suffer this chaos and bounce back to normal in hours. Call me nervous, but if my home had been buzzed in such a manner, I probably wouldn't be sleeping for at least a day or two...
