Autonomous Iraqis?
Reader comments on reference to "Iraqi
autonomy"
In an editorial response to my earlier
notes on "Exit strategy", K.G. Elliott
observes:
"When you use the word 'Iraqis' to whom, exactly, are you referring when you continue with 'Their political autonomy must be returned to them quickly.' I think you will agree that anyone who had political power in Iraq is not anyone who should have any power in the future.
When Iraq stabilizes, the people who will gain the power will be having it for the first time. If you can stand an analogy: A quick retreat of the US from Iraq would be much like dropping a sixteen year old driver into the middle of a Grand Prix."
