The Montessori World Educational Institute offers three courses
for the education of children. Course I
focuses on children ages 2 to 5, Course
II focuses on children 2 to 7, Course
IIa focuses on children 5 - 7, Course
III focuses on children 6 to 9, and Course
IV concentrates on children ages 6 to 12. For those interested,
the above courses of study can lead to a Montessori
diploma, and college credit can
be earned for a home study program as well as for individual classes.
The Institute also offers an Intensive
Internship
Program. In addition, The Institute provides a number of resources
to help parents and teachers interested in each of the above levels.
The following is a list of some of the resources made available
through the Montessori World Educational Institute:
1. A comprehensive individualized Home Study
Program for the study of Montessori educational theory and
practice. Included are a set of clearly illustrated curriculum
manuals which detail a developmental sequence of lessons for each
curricular area. The Home Study Program also includes the
services
of a mentor who can answer questions, provide feedback, and offer
suggestions and
practical help. Each mentor is carefully selected by the Institute,
and has several years of successful teaching experience using
the Montessori method.
2. Curriculum classes which provide demonstrations of all lessons,
student practice, and some teaching material making. See information
on Summer Workshops.

Programs of study are organized to maximize convenience and
accessibility
so students can study without the necessity of giving up work,
or leaving home for an extended period of time.
Students may enroll in any part of the program for their own
information,
without being required to enroll in the full diploma program.
An Internship can be arranged at one of the Montessori World Educational Institute's approved sites. In an internship you will have the opportunity to observe children and trained teachers. Direct training and supervision from the school director and daily discussions and feedback will be provided.*
*The internship is recommended, but not required for a diploma at this time.
Upon satisfactory completion of all curriculum classes and the Home Study in chosen Course of Study, students may apply to take the Diploma Examination. The examination fee is payable before the exam. This extensive exam consists of three parts: 1) a two-hour written examination on Montessori theory and methodology, 2) a comprehensive oral examination requiring precise presentation and use of the teaching materials, and 3) the completion and presentation of required handmade curriculum materials (if not previously approved by curriculum course instructor.)
Students may receive Post Graduate Extension Credits from the University of California at Santa Barbara for curriculum classes and Home Study courses completed through the Institute. The current fee, payable to the Regents of California, is $90.00 per three unit curriculum class, $165.00 for the six unit Course II Home Study Program. Application is made directly to MWEI. Acceptance of credit toward a degree can be determined only by the institution granting the degree.
Most Montessori schools require a teacher to: 1) hold a Montessori diploma, and 2) meet minimum state requirements. Current information on state requirements is available from your state agency.
