Reflection of Web Gift to Trenton

In creating a web gift for Trenton I was faced with the difficulty of trying to figure out what Trenton might like. Creating a gift of any type is much harder that just buying a gift. However, after a few online discussions I persuaded Trenton to send me some pictures of himself. I wasnt sure what I would get since he had mentioned that he wanted to scan some old photographs. My original idea was to create some kind of collage with the photos, but when I saw all of the pictures Trenton sent I decided to make some changes. I am still learning how to use Flash and was in the middle of trying to figure out if I could do a collage. Those two factors persuaded me to create a slide show using iMovie.

I placed all of the photographs in somewhat of a chronological order and according to type. For example; there are number of photographs of Trenton as a child, young man, and as an adult. Most of the pictures where he was alone were when he was traveling. The second category was related to his family. I took all of the pictures where he was with his family members and his wife and created that category. The last of the categories related to his experience as a teacher. What I wanted to illustrate with the pictures I received was to show the growth of Trenton. I dont know if I captured that, but the order of the pictures and the different categories made sense to me.

I also wanted to incorporate some music to the slide show and had a hard time deciding on the music to choose let alone the song to choose. There were a couple of songs I had considered, but the Dire Straits song really made sense to me in the slide show. The feel of the song along with combination of the pictures and pace of the transitions felt good to me. I find that in creating a slide show the images and words of the music make a huge impact on the message I want to portray. I have done a few of these slide shows and the music is sometimes the inspiration for the images, but in Trentons web gift it was the other way around.

The biggest obstacle I had was in the compression of the slide show into a Quicktime movie. For some reason I could not get Quicktime to save the slide show as a streaming movie. After hours of tinkering I figured out what I was doing wrong. I just didnt select the streaming option in the save mode for Quicktime. I just wanted to kick myself at that point. Well, needless to say I was very pleased with the final product of the slide show.
