H1N1 Outbreaks

Pandemic Declaration | US Public Health Emergency | Map | List of Countries | Resources

The WHO has raised the pandemic alert level to 6: Pandemic

A new influenza virus has been reported in many countries. The official designation for this virus is pandemic (H1N1) 2009. This virus has also been referred to as Influenza A(H1N1), swine flu, North American Flu, and Mexican Flu.

There have been at least 16,705 officially confirmed deaths.

Although some victims had serious illnesses before becoming infected with the new H1N1, many were young and otherwise healthy. Although there is wide range of ages for those who have died, most of the deaths have occurred in people ages 20 - 60 years old. The virus is spreading human-to-human and has likely infected many people who have yet to be identified.

Most of the initial reports of disease in both confirmed and suspected cases were associated with travel to Mexico. Most cases are now associated with schools. Health care workers in several countries have become infected. Community transmission of the virus is frequent.

Sustained person-to-person spread is likely occurring throughout the world.

Some countries have instituted travel advisories, screening of travelers and activated their pandemic plans.
