The male specimen was caught off Cochin (9° 58' N, 76° 17 E), SW coast of India at a depth of about 100-150 m. Total length – 102 cm, disc width - 47 cm, dorsal view, ventral view. Collected by Akhilesh.K.V & Hashim Manjebrayakath in the Summer of 2008.
Correction: The Fishery Survey of India, Government of India organisation mandated
to do the survey of fishery resources in the Indian EEZ is operating four research
longliners and these vessels are regularly reporting this species from the Arabain
Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar waters of Indian EEZ. Therefore,
according to the Annual Report of the Institure for 2006-2007, the credit for

Pelagic stingrays from eastern Indonesia were reported by White, W. T. and
Dharmandi (2007). Species and size compositions and reproductive biology of
rays (Chondrichthyes, Batoidea) caught in target and non-target fisheries in
eastern Indonesia. Journal of Fish Biology 70, 1809–1837.
p . 1830 paragraph: Pteroplatytrygon violacea (Bonaparte). A total of 132 P.
violacea was recorded, of which 37 were females (452–623 mm WD), 15 were
males (410– 542 mm WD) and 80 counted but not sexed [Fig. 11(c)]. All
of the males recorded possessed fully-calcified claspers, thus the only inference
about size at maturity that could be made is that males mature at a size <410
mm WD [Fig. 11(d)]. No pregnant females or small neonates were recorded, thus
the size at birth could not be determined.
