De Cordova Museum and Sculpture Park-- Lincoln, MA

Outstanding! I've passed by the signs for the museum for some fourteen years and never thought twice about it, until this weekend. What a great museum, and what a mistake not going sooner.
There are bigger, better known, more heavily endowed, more strategically located museums, but this is a great place. I am not sure what it is specifically, but I was comfortable in every sense of the word. From the campus layout to the interior flow it was incredibly relaxing and enjoyable.
This was the opening of the Big Bang! (Abstract Painting for the 21st Century). There is always a Modern or Abstract art shows popping up somewhere, but this was unique. Most of the images were associated with concepts from science and technology. In our world of high tech and synthetics this exhibit is a welcome synthesis of the technical world and the magic of art. Defiantly worth seeing.
So, what is so special about this museum? Well lets start with the sculpture park. Seventy five works of art are planted over the thirty five acre wooded park. These aren’t just giant steel labyrinths jutting out of the ground, but some of the most creative outdoor sculptures I have seen. How about 7 art studios located on the campus in support of some four-thousand students annually. The museum has seventy five instructors providing year round support for classes and workshops. Maybe its just me, but that seems pretty impressive for any school. There is also an on-site gift and art supply store were you can buy beautiful works of art or the material to create your own. The museum it self is very well laid out with a smooth flow between exhibits rising four floors up to the Sculpture Roof Terrace.
The museum is extremely accessible from several of the major highways around greater Boston and is well worth a trip in any season.
