Hospital Point Lighthouse-- Beverly, MA

The Hospital Point Lighthouse has been illuminating the Beverly harbor since1872. To look at it you wouldn’t know that it has been standing against the pounding of the sea for some one-hundred and thirty four years. It is immaculately maintained, with a glistening white exterior. The facility is still in use and staffed by the United States Coast Guard.

Over the years this site has been the home of several structures which eventually evolved into the current lighthouse and barracks. In 1801 there was a smallpox hospital sitting on the site, which was converted into military barracks during the War of 1812. The structure burnt down in 1849 and was replaced in 1872 by a two story gatekeepers house and forty five foot lighthouse. Major renovations were performed on the structures in 1947 and 1948 which have resulted in the facility standing today.

Since this is a working lighthouse staffed by the Coast Guard, the interior of the facility is closed to the public except for a yearly Home Coming Day in August. I have visited during this time and its a lot of fun to tour the tower and see the inner workings of the lighthouse. The Coast Guard staff were extremely hospitable and tolerant of my questions and picture taking. Even if you visit outside of Home Coming Day you have an excellent view of the house from the associated parking lot; this is where I got my best pictures. Bring a sturdy tripod (to stand against the sea breeze) and fire away.
