Kennebunkport is a well known as a weekend getaway, but it is also a great day trip from the greater Boston area. About an hour and a half drive and you are at the beautiful seascape resort town of Kennebunkport. As with most of these towns there are plenty of arts and craft shops, souvenir stands, and seafood eateries to keep tourists busy for hours. There are also several upscale restaurants that can go head-to-head with those found in major cities.

One of the more enjoyable ways to explore the area is by taking the Intown Trolley . The tour lasts about forty five minutes and hits most of the high points. The trolley can be picked up at Dock Square, Nonantum Resort, Colony Hotel, Rhumbline Motor Inn, Franciscan Monastery, or Kennebunk Beach. The trolley follows the shoreline for the better part of the trip, passing the classic resorts, beaches and stopping a stones throw from the Bush compound. NOTE: If the boats are in the water, then the Bush's are probably in town.

Further along the tour you can be let off at the Saint Anthony's Franciscan Monastery . Open to the public, the Monastery is a beautiful location. The grounds are decorated with statuary and an incredible outdoor chapel. The trolley's come by every hour, so take your time and explore the grounds and facilities.

The trolley is also a nice way to get to the beach without paying and fighting for parking. Again, the trolley comes by once every hour. If you must drive to the beach, parking permits for non-residents cost $5 for the day, $15 for the week according to Kennebunkport.org .

Another option for touring Kennebunkport is to take the carriage ride starting on Ocean Ave. Information about cost and hours can be found at their web site .
