The Trib Comic Book - The Collectable Comics! was a free supplement to the Saturday edition of the Winnipeg Tribune. Printed in color, on newsprint, each 8.25-inch x 10.75-inch comic book contained Sunday comic strips, published one day in advance. 155 issues of The Trib Comic Book were published from September 24, 1977 (Volume 1, Number 1) thru September 6, 1980 (Volume 4, Number 36).
Sunday color comic strips from Los Angeles Times syndicated comic strip, Star Trek, written and drawn by Thomas Warkentin, appeared weekly on page 18 of 41 issues, December 1, 1979 (Volume 3, Number 48) thru September 6, 1980 (Volume 4, Number 36). The Sunday Star Trek strips were abbreviated by omitting several panels to fit the comic book format (a common practice for some newspapers). The published strips spanned the first five story arcs and ended with a single strip from the sixth story arc.
Spock makes a cameo appearance in the John Darling strip, November 17, 1979 (Volume 3, Number 46).
According to experts, the Winnipeg Tribune was the first newspaper to publish Sunday comic strips in a comic book format and more than 95% of the original print run was thrown out with the rest of the newspaper. Most remaining copies are fragile and may have puzzle and games pages marked up.
The Winnipeg Tribune was a daily newspaper serving Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for 90 years. The newspaper ceased publication unexpectedly in August of 1980.
