Christopher Main Sr and his wife Amelia Weaver left Henry County,
Indiana and moved
a last time to St Joseph County, Indiana and settled in Warren Twp
NW of South Bend.
Both are buried at Portage Prairie Cemetery in German Twp in a rather
idylic setting although
the inscriptions on the stones are getting very difficult to read.The
gigantic tree seems to add
to the serenity of the scene and mitigates the obvious ravages of time
on the plot itself.
The large tilting MAIN headstone has multiple inscriptions:
West face: Christopher Main, born Oct. 6, 1774, died July
12, 1866
Millea, wife of C. Main, died Feb 11, 1841, born Dec 17, 1778
South face: their son Orrin Main, born Aug 18, 1822, died
Jan 30, 1911
Elizabeth w/o O. Main born May 17, 1824 died Jan 29, 1863
East face: Sarah A. dau of O. & E. Main, died
July 21, 1848 age 1 yr 15 das
Esther wife of O.W. Main, died Jan 18, 1887, aged 51 yrs, 5 mos, 23
das
North face: their daughter Millie Conway, born Apr 10, 1797, died Feb. 19, 1882, aged 84 yrs
Buried elsewhere in the cemetery are the following members of the Christopher
& Amelia Main family and their descendants:
Their daughter Olive Main (1796 - 1861) and her husband James
Myler (1793-1880) plus some of their children.
Their son Noise (Noyes?) Main (1809 - 1857),
his wife Anna (1816 -1865) .
Noise & Anna's son John Main (1835-1908), his wife Sarah
Jane (1840-1873) and their son John C (1863-1873)
Another John C. (1872 -1872) is a grandson of Noise & Anna and
the son of Norris Monroe & Marium E. Main
Christopher was married a second time after Amelia's death in 1841 to
Elizabeth
(Hamlin
Backus) Main,
the widow of Seth Backus, and she is buried nearby and next to Seth
Backus.

So, Portage Prairie Cemetery in St. Joseph County, Indiana is where
Christopher and Amelia's earthly journey ended.
But, the mystery continues as we know not when and where their journey
began.
