Martin Pugh

Supposedly, Martin Pugh's great grandfather was from Scotland and spent some time in England before
emigrating to America and settling in North Carolina before the revolutionary war. Martin's grandfather
Jacob (1767-1825) was a native of North Carolina.

Many North Carolina Pughs trace their ancestry back to people from Wales who traveled to Pennsylvania,
settled and then moved down through Virginia to NC. It's probable and indicated by DNA testing that Jacob
Pugh's father was an Enoch Pugh born 1735 who was the son of the Thomas Pugh who left Chester County
PA and moved to North Carolina.

Jacob Pugh was married twice. First to an Esther McDaniel and then to a Dorcas Glasgow married
18 May 1806 in Randolph County NC. Enoch Pugh was the first child of this second family, but he
had an older brother Isaac and two older sisters from his father's first marriage. Other children of
Enoch and Dorcas were Nancy, Penniah, Dorcas, Jacob, Thomas Jefferson, Jesse, Lydia, Mary and
John. All the children were born in North Carolina between 1807 and 1824 and the family migrated
to Wayne Township, Marion County, Indiana in 1824.

Enoch Pugh (1807-1861) married Charlotte Martindale (1811-1843), daughter of Martin and Elizabeth
Pearson Martindale, in Marion Co, Indiana, 18 Feb 1830. The Martindales had reportedly come to Indiana
from South Carolina. Martin born 2 Mar 1831 was the first child, followed by Dorcas Ann born 1832,
Jacob born 1834, Alexander born 1836, Elizabeth Jane born 1838, Thomas Jefferson born 1840 and
Clarinda born 1843. After the death of Charlotte  Martindale Pugh in 1843, Enoch married Mary Susan
Craig and had six more children by her, two who died young and Charlotte, Joel, John and Mary.

Martin  somehow managed to get to get the 100 some miles to Vermilion Co, IL, found and married
Catharine Baum  6 June 1859. They had six daughters and one son. The son lived only a year or two
and the first born daughter died at age 34. The remaining five daughters lived full lives and four married.
