Heading
north to Scranton we visited a real coal mine. |

|
The
adjacent coal museum was also very interesting. |

|
Our
trip down into the mine starts in this cable car that is about
3 feet tall. |

|
Our
guide had been a miner for many years |

|
There
were, from time to time, indications that accidents took place. |

|
Heading
over to Steamtown (conveniently adjacent to a big mall) we see
on of the largest locomotives ever made - and it had a top speed
of something like 80 mph ! |

|
Driven
by a slightly smaller engine, we took a short ride in this caboose,
with a nice guide who explained everyting about its operation. |

|
Several
days later we returned to Jim Thorpe, a small town we had previously
visited, and enjoyed, with Holly and Tom |

|
Very
intersting old buildings line many of the streets. Every one
seemed to be a shop! |

|
This
spectacular train setup filled the second floor of one of the
downtownbuildings. What a labor of love. |

|
Asa
Packer got his start in Mystic, CT where the Packer Building
still stands, near the railroad station. |

|
Quite
a climb up the hill, but only about 4 minutes from the center
of town. |

|
The
view from Asa's porch is dominated by the Episcopal church which
his's wife had built. Note the lovely view of the surrounding
hills. |
