Our Bear Creek Vacation

While Holly, Tom, and the children headed off to Tobago for David's wedding, we took care of the dogs, fish, bird, and our two cats. When not busy doing that we toured some of the many area attractions.

Heading north to Scranton we visited a real coal mine.

Loading...
The adjacent coal museum was also very interesting.

Loading...
Our trip down into the mine starts in this cable car that is about 3 feet tall.

Loading...
Our guide had been a miner for many years

Loading...
There were, from time to time, indications that accidents took place.

Heading over to Steamtown (conveniently adjacent to a big mall) we see on of the largest locomotives ever made - and it had a top speed of something like 80 mph !

Loading...
Driven by a slightly smaller engine, we took a short ride in this caboose, with a nice guide who explained everyting about its operation.

Loading...
Several days later we returned to Jim Thorpe, a small town we had previously visited, and enjoyed, with Holly and Tom

Loading...
Very intersting old buildings line many of the streets. Every one seemed to be a shop!

Loading...
This spectacular train setup filled the second floor of one of the downtownbuildings. What a labor of love.

Loading...
Asa Packer got his start in Mystic, CT where the Packer Building still stands, near the railroad station.

Loading...
Quite a climb up the hill, but only about 4 minutes from the center of town.

The view from Asa's porch is dominated by the Episcopal church which his's wife had built. Note the lovely view of the surrounding hills.

We also spent a day at the King of Prussia Mall, a place well-worth visiting if you ever have the chance. We are pleased to report that all dogs, fish, and the bird survived our care and they were very happy to have their family return from Tobago.
