Greetings
All,
My name is M.L. Belanger. I'm
a working photographer and video producer with 18 years of production
experience. I've been lighting with fluorescent fitxures for
about 12 of those years. Back in the old days we used to build
them from scratch and spend lots of time and money trying to
find color balanced tubes, high-frequency ballast, and the perfect
light-weight design.
Then along came Kinoflo*, Lowel*,
and Gyoury* (to name a few). Suddenly fluorescent lights were
everywhere, and standardized as well. All of these companies
make fixtures using the industry standard 22-inch 55W fluorescent
tube. And all of them offer a selection of tubes in various dead-on
color temperatures. What could be better?
Well, how about a fluroscent
fixture that doesn't cost $1200, or $800, or $600? How about
a small, light-weight, easy to use modular fixture designed by
professional photographers and videoographers that uses those
same dead-on 55W tubes, and sells for $350?
Introducing the FluroLight*.
Its the answer you've been looking for, at a price you can't
pass up.

Hello Michael,
I received the lights a few days ago. I do not have any questions
but I do have a few comments which may help you make improved
versions:
- The construction is very nice and feels very high quality
- the clamps on the ballast are a wonderful and thoughtful touch
- the header cable connectors are great, the best I've ever
used!
- the light heads are also nicely constructed and snug
- The polished reflectors are very reflective, HOWEVER, the
sharp bends in the metal produces noticeable patterns in the
reflected light. I will have to modify my reflectors with other
parabolic style reflectors before I could use it. Putting diffusion
on is not acceptable as it reduces the punch and the stops.
- I wish there were more light control options: little flexible
barn doors for controlling the light - I will probably add these
as a modification.
- the posts are nice and rugged. Difficult to remove (which
might be a good thing) but very difficult to put back on. I wish
the post was designed a little differently for easier removal
and reattachment. Also, an adjustable joint at the base of the
post would be ideal (just like real KinoFlos) but I realize that
this would necessitate a large change in the design and add more
costs.
Overall I am happy with it and am sure
I will get a lot of use from them. For the price It is a great
system. The biggest challenge, as I said before, will be in fixing
the reflector shape.
Thanks again,
Branan
Note:
As per Branan's feedback above, the reflector's we use are very
efficient (outputting 162% the amount of light as a flat reflector)
and they do exhibit some hot-spots. For still work or interviews
these are usually not visible but definitely show up when there
is movement in the frame. Because the tubes are already soft,
you can actually get very good results with a lite weight diffusion
designed to combine multiple light sources into one bank, such
as opal frost. The heavy diffusion needed with normal incandescent
lights is NOT needed.
As for removable barn doors, removable
mounting posts, etc. we're taking all your great input and rolling
it in to the next version of the FluroLight. Stay tuned for more
info.

To answer a few quick questions:
Yes, you can use any standard 55w tube. Take $30 off
the package price to order a FluroLight with no tubes.
Yes, the ballast is non-dimming. After much research
I decided dimming ballasts are a crock of $#!&. You pay hundreds
more for a 10% usable dimming range, equivalent to just moving
the fixture back a new inches or laying on diffusion.
Yes, its up to you to provide a case for all this
gear. I haven't found anything I like as far as a case goes that
would be economical to offer, so I decided to keep the kit price
down and let you all come up with your own solutions. If you
find something especially cool let me know.
Yes, you can order stands as well., $125 per stand
w/ grip head. All our grip equipment comes from world famous
Norms Studio Equipment in Holllywood, CA. These folks have been
making indestructible grip gear for many decades and I trust
their stuff to kick butt at a very fair price, and I pass that
on to you.
Yes, I'll ship anywhere in the United States, and
probably Canada as well (I'll contact you with extra shipping
charges when you place an order.)
Yes, you can pay by credit card using the buttons
