Interesting Exchange on GretaWire

It's probably a bunch of people reading too much into an off-hand comment...unless it isn't. It all got started on GretaWire Monday morning and the back and forth continued into the evening and beyond the midnight hour. This is an extremely condensed version, representative of numerous posts, that got started with this:

  • Comment by Simply Amazed: Greta, I will record the show. I can’t stay up that late. Unless you like the late hours, I wish you could be on earlier, say 8 p.m. Eastern!
  • Comment by Greta Van Susteren: i would like an earlier time, too…the time of my show is the drawback for me…and a reason why i might want to change careers
  • Comment by Beth: Greta, Please don’t leave OTR. Get Fox to change your hours!
  • Comment by Lisa S: Seems like Greta has had a lot of time off lately and not quite focused on the big stories of missing and murdered women.
  • Comment by David 1787From IL: I think Greta might be trying to get out of her contract. If Greta wants a change jobs then it’s in her best interest to do so….Especially if she dosesn’t like the hours… She just might be yearning to go and practice law again..
  • Comment by Barb in Bolingbrook: I agree David…But how cool is it that she’s letting us down slowly ya know? They cannot replace her, but I understand you gotta do what ya gotta do. She should go back to practice law. Although I think she’d be a kick-ass DA. Barb don’t like defense attorneys. (Um…till I need one)
  • Comment by jillian wv: Greta has pretty much burned her bridges with CNN. she quit there and has not been shy about taking shots at them about having like 67 people on their staff to do andersen coopers 360 ten PM show while they have about 12 on her staff and in one pod cast she was in an auditorium that had been set up for reporters and was going to tear up CNN’s sign so they would not know where they were seated..So I think CNN may be out of the picture…
  • Comment by jillian wv: It takes 2 parties to re-up a contract and there is the possibility Greta was ready to re-up and possibly Fox was not…
  • Comment by PAM in PA: Greta, Everyone’s up in arms about your possible job change!
  • Comment by Greta Van Susteren: i am not going any place soon….so don’t be up in arms!!

Eric Burns: 'I Was Given No Reason'

It was reported yesterday by Inside Cable News that Fox News Watch is going to be revamped, and that long-time host Eric Burns will be leaving FNC:

ICN has learned that FNC has not renewed their contributor agreement with Fox News Watch host Eric Burns which is set to expire later this spring. I'm told the program will remain focused on media criticism but will be revamped with a new host and more of an eye on the evolving new media. Fox News Watch handily beats CNN's Reliable Sources…proving that Fox is not afraid to tweak even successful programming.
Mr Burns, who did background pieces during the early years of News Watch, took over hosting duties in 1998 following the death of Eric Breindel.

The media analysis program has bounced around the weekend schedule of late, though as of now it is back in its familiar 6:30 pm Eastern slot. Oddly, programs that are less popular (like the Journal Editorial Report) are given multiple plays over the weekend, while News Watch gets just one airing.

Eric Burns confirmed to J$P that the ICN report is accurate, and told us:
Fox News has told me that my contract will be terminated within the next 2 months, perhaps sooner. I was given no reason. It certainly has nothing to do with ratings; the last episode of Fox News Watch was the second highest-rated weekend show on on all 3 cable news networks and the program has almost been in the top 4 or 5. I have no theory, none, why they are getting rid of me. Although I heard rumors, I have never heard reasons.
Before joining Fox, Mr Burns was a correspondent for NBC News. He won an Emmy award for media criticism, and is is also a respected author (Virtue, Valor, and Vanity and Infamous Scribblers, among others).

You can tell Fox if you agree with this decision at comments@foxnews.com.

Addendum: Fox News Watch has provided us with a host of memorable video clips. Just a few:

Reader Poll: Should Fox Invite Ron Paul?

Shepard Smith and Greta van Susteren have weighed in. John Gibson has had his say. Now it is your turn: should Ron Paul be a part of Fox's Sunday night Presidential forum? Voting is now closed! The results:

  • Yes: 33%
  • Yes, and Duncan Hunter too: 25%
  • No: 41%

Needless to say, results are unscientific.

Commenting Rules

We welcome all points of view at J$P, but unlike some sites we don't permit people to greet those who disagree with personal attacks, name-calling, or profanity. So if you want to avoid having your comments edited or deleted, or getting yourself banned completely for up to a year (until our annual bamnesty), please follow these simple guidelines:

No profanity. We are a family-friendly resource, and there is no reason to resort to foul language, regardless of how badly your arguments have been shredded.

No personal attacks. If you want to call names, you know where you will be welcomed. But here, please conduct all discussions with at least a modicum of intelligence and respectability. Personal attacks on other posters will not be tolerated. This goes double for personal attacks on us.

No lengthy cut and paste. A line or two might be OK, but if you want to draw attention to somebody else's opinion, provide a link.

No off-topic ramblings. If you think a comments thread is meant to be a free-for-all smorgasbord for anything that comes into your head, you are in the wrong place. Try to maintain a least a tenuous connection to the subject matter at hand.

No abuse. Posting the same message over and over, especially in multiple off-topic threads, is not a good way to ingratiate yourself. We've only had to ban one individual, and it was for this type of abuse. We don't countenance expressions of racism or threats of violence either.

No juvenilia. We've had our fill of the insipid FNC insult phrases that pervade the cybersphere, and they will not be permitted here. These include, but are not limited to, such knee-slappers as "Faux News", "O'Lielly", "Fixed Noise", "David Ass-Man", and the like.
