Mike first started making short films with his parents’ Super 8mm camera when he was 11 years old and experimented with special effects; model building, animation and multiple exposure. He attended Wright State University, studied under Academy Award nominated documentary filmmakers Jim Klein and Julia Reichert, and earned a BFA in Motion Picture Production. While at Wright State he co-founded Mercury Films with director Jim VanBebber and produced/photographed the underground cult films DEADBEAT AT DAWN, ROADKILL, MY SWEET SATAN and THE MANSON FAMILY. A music video he shot with VanBebber for the band PANTERA was featured in American Cinematographer magazine.
King moved to Los Angeles in 1997 and lensed many varied productions. He returned to Ohio 3 years later and began thriving as a DP. He photographed 2 projects for filmmaker Steven Bognar, PERSONAL BELONGINGS and GRAVEL, and both had screenings at Sundance. Mike shot transitional elements for the documentary, A LION IN THE HOUSE, which Bognar co-produced/directed with Julia Reichert, that was broadcast nationally on PBS and won a national Emmy in 2007. His work with filmmaker Samuel Turcotte, KATA, TEXAS MBA, NO PAIN NO GAIN- all film, helped earn many awards.
With the transition to digital production, King has been very prolific, shooting 4 features for Full Moon Entertainment alone. He was one of the first DPs to utilize the Panasonic SDX900 for a feature and was highlighted on their promotional DVD for the camera system. Other filmmakers Mike has worked with include; David Decouteau (THE FRIGHTENING, 35mm Scope in 6 days!), J. Todd Anderson, storyboard artist to the Coen Bros., (HD feature, MY MUMMY), Tom Hobbs (award-winning INDIAN WAYS and COYOTE MONDAY) and Lonzo Jones (award-winning educational films) among others.
His recent projects include documentaries for director Aileen LeBlanc. DAYTON CODEBREAKERS was broadcast on over 100 PBS stations nationwide and was nominated for a regional Emmy for best photography. LeBlanc’s upcoming HD doc feature, TAKE US HOME, is being shot in Ethiopia and Israel. He followed the band DOWN through Europe in 2006, shooting documentary and concert footage, and also spent a Summer month during 2007 in Nigeria working with documentarian Susan Stern. In Winter 2006 King shot Danny Draven’s latest film, a 35mm feature, GHOST MONTH, which won an award for Best Cinematography at the 2007 Chicago Horror Film Festival.
Mike is also a partner in ImageWerx Film & Video, Inc., a commercial production company based in Dayton, Ohio. He has many established clients and extensive experience in 35mm, 16mm, all analog video, and most HD formats.
