Introduction
This walkthrough is written in the 'golden path' style — that is, I won't be simply explaining the bare-bones solutions to the puzzles, but will try to guide you through the rich and complex world of Rhem in such a way that you see all that the game has to offer, and in the most logically organised way. So we'll be taking our time, especially at the beginning of the walkthrough, when it's important to build up a sense of how the game works and what it expects of you.
As such, the walkthrough will not give you any 'press this, then that, then do this' solutions. Rather, I will ease you towards the solution, trying to help you understand what it is you are doing any why. To that end, I'll sometimes take you on a longer route than is absolutely necessary (an early example of this is in The Way to the Library). But hopefully, if I've written the walkthrough well, you'll figure out the solution before I tell you what it is.
The Rhem series has become well-known as a puzzle-lover's paradise — there is little by way of story, although there are a few tantalising glimpses of the inhabitants of Rhem, who are otherwise conspicuously absent from the areas being explored. Perhaps we will learn more of them in future instalments, although it is unlikely; whereas in the later Myst games, for example, the puzzles encountered usually service the story-line, in Rhem the puzzles are almost exclusively there to serve their own inner logic and interrelations; the story is necessarily minimalist in order to let the puzzles themselves come to the fore.
As in all the games in the series, the two principal characters in Rhem are the brothers Zetais and Kales. Both are working in tandem to explore the mysterious world: Kales is based in Rhem itself, while Zetais is elsewhere, collating and analysing the findings. You are essentially a go-between, helping Kales with his exploration — though never meeting him face-to-face — and taking the results to Zetais. The brothers often contact you when they need assistance; and that is precisely how Rhem 3: The Secret Library begins.
