We hope you can join us Friday morning, May 18th, for Field Day. We will head over to the northwest corner of Washington Park about 8:30. Feel free to walk with us if you’d like or meet us there if that’s easier. Please send children with a water bottle, a hat, appropriate shoes, and slather on the sunscreen before they come to school. Thanks for the help.

I will send home detailed information regarding our end of the year celebration early next week. For those of you trying to rearrange schedules, tentatively plan on meeting in the library at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30th and then moving outside for a very simple “ceremony” followed by the all school picnic.

Thank you for having ongoing conversations with children about being safe and respectful of others. We refer to our agreement poster often to remind each other to be helpful, respectful and understanding with one another.

I hope you all had a great break and are ready for the last seven weeks of school. It is quite hard for me to believe that the school year is winding down and that this year’s kindergartners will soon be first graders! Children are beginning to ask lots of questions about what to expect next year and feel really proud of what they accomplished this year.

Mark your calendars, we will have our Spring/Rainforest performance with Room 002, Room 003, and Room 004 on Wednesday, May 16th in the auditorium. We hope you can join us. Invitations will come home soon.

Thank you for having ongoing conversations with children about being safe and respectful of others. We refer to our agreement poster often to remind each other to be helpful, respectful and understanding with one another.

We will be taking a trip to our very own planetarium next week and will have the opportunity to ask Mr. Sodano many of our unanswered questions.

Don’t forget that the annual Steele Auction is coming up on February 3rd. Be sure to check out the two art projects that our class created and contributed. Many thanks to Dean (Avery’s dad) for his time and hard work in building custom frames and beautifully matting our artwork, he really did an amazing job.

For those families worried about having missed their snack day, fear not. The January calendar was not sent home because we had an excess of snack to go through. The February calendar will be sent home this week. Thanks for your help.

A friend pointed me to a website called The Monster Engine.

We had a great first week in Room 001. After just five days, some children are referring to themselves as authors, artists, scientists, and mathematicians. We have had a few discussions about the ways in which we should treat one another in our classroom, our school, and our community. We are working together to create an agreement poster to display in our classroom and will share it with you when it is complete.

Many families have been asking about Back to School Night. It is Thursday, September 7th from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m., hope to see you there.

Thank you to all the families that have returned their policy forms, information forms, and letters about their children, I appreciate it. If you have not yet returned your information, please do so as soon as possible.

I’m really looking forward to a year of discovery, questioning, and learning with your children. Thanks for a great start.

The final parent letter has been posted and I am trying to convince myself that the school year is actually over. As it always seems, I learned more than I imagined this year and really enjoyed spending my days with the children in Room 001. Thanks for an incredible year!

Please be sure to come and visit next year. I hope you have a wonderful summer, see you in August!

Room 001 was quite proud of their contribution to the Science Fair. Children spent a lot of time experimenting and learning how much work scientists have to do in order to achieve accurate results. We explored whether a foil boat would hold more pennies in fresh water or salt water before sinking. Please feel free to stop by and check out our project!

Just a reminder, we will have our Spring/Ocean performance with Room 002, Room 003, and Room 004 on Wednesday, May 17th at 10:00 a.m. in the auditorium. We hope you can join us.

You are invited to join us on the last day of school for a very simple “end of the year” ceremony! We will meet on the front lawn at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 25th. The all-school picnic lunch will follow. Hope to see you there!

The store is usually closed on Sunday, but for this special event, the staff will be donating their time and the store will be open from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., please be sure to stop by and tell your friends. Many thanks to all involved!

Our class has started a unit on Space and we are already learning a lot about our solar system, gravity, space travel, and plan to discover the answers to some questions we have about particular planets, along with many others. We hope to take a trip to our very own planetarium in the next few weeks and have the opportunity to ask Mr. Sodano many of our unanswered questions.

Children are becoming more aware of their strengths and weaknesses (especially in relation to their peers). It is important to me that children feel good about what they know and be motivated to learn more instead of getting “hung up” on the things with which they struggle. We have talked in class about people learning things at different times, at different rates, and at varying levels of proficiency. Our class, also, talked about how personal interests can impact how much time people spend learning about a given subject. We have spent some time acknowledging and celebrating strengths in others, even if those very strengths are our weaknesses (I begin to see that children acquire this skill more easily than most adults). Thanks for supporting children at home.

Wednesday will mark the 100th day of school. Please help children select one hundred small, nonperishable, and nonliving items for a math project we are planning to celebrate our first one-hundred days together. Be sure to select items that you do not need back and that can be glued relatively easily to paper. Children can select one hundred of the same item or groups of different items that add up to one hundred.

I had to post pictures of two of the coolest looking (and tasting) gifts I received this year. The first is from my paraprofessional, Ms. Olga. She is from Russia and gave me a representation of a Russian instrument that is filled with amazing chocolate and hard candy. The wrappers are so much fun as they have great pictures and the words are all in Russian. You just never know what you're going to get (unless you pick the one candy with the peanut on the wrapper). The second is from a family in my classroom from Bosnia. They gave me a box of nougat dessert candy from their country. There is something about the box that I find so unique, but they tell me that the candy is even better. I’ll have to wait and see.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the long weekend.

We finished our class book that will be published through Nationwide Learning, Inc. and are anxious to see how it turns out! As we were finishing up the book, I overheard a child say to a friend, “I don't know if I want to be an author, this is a lot of work!” The friend replied thoughtfully, “Yeah, but I can’t wait for my mom to see it!” For those families that ordered books, we are told they will arrive in early December.

Children were quite proud of their dance performance and we thank families for their support, especially given the auditorium tends to get quite warm. It was particularly cool to have our bird unit integrated into the performance. Thanks to Mr. Miller for all his hard work!

Thank you for having ongoing conversations with children about being safe and respectful of others.

We will be concluding our study of birds on Monday, November 7th. I asked children to bring their bird journals, as well as any birds they had shared during the course of the unit. Be sure to stop by and take a look at the bird book our class created, the artwork is incredible! We will begin our study of patterns on Wednesday, November 9th. We are hoping that some of the students in Room 007 will inspire us on our field trip to the zoo, as they recently finished a unit on patterns in nature.

We would love to have one or two more volunteers for our field trip to the Denver Zoo with Room 007 on Tuesday, November 8th. We will be leaving school at 9:15 and returning about 1:30. Please be sure to send a sack lunch with children, we will be eating at the zoo.

Thank you for having ongoing conversations with children about being safe and respectful of others.
I have grown increasingly frustrated with the ways privacy and security are put at risk when it's convenient for institutions or organizations. These decisions are often made under the guise of efficiency or monetary savings. This frustration exists with many businesses, websites, government agencies, etc., but the one that I am most familiar with is the school district for which I work...

I really appreciate you sharing your observations and insights about your children as learners, friends, and, most basically, people. Thank you for helping us support your children in the classroom.

We will be taking a field trip to the Denver Zoo with Room 007 on Tuesday, November 8th. Artist Dave DeVries brings out the monsters lurking in children's artwork and does an incredible job maintaining the integrity of the original design.

I have sent a copy of the conference schedule home and posted the schedule on the website calendar. I am looking forward to talking with you, sharing children's work, and answering any questions you may have. If you were not able to sign up for a conference on October 19th, please contact me to set up another time.

We have been so impressed with the work children are doing in their bird journals. One child shared that as she walked into a restaurant with a friend from another school they saw a bird and she commented that she could write about it in her bird journal. Her friend, of course, had no idea what she was talking about and the child was quite proud to explain it to her. She looked at our class quite seriously and said, “I guess not everyone does bird journals.”

Thank you for having ongoing conversations with children about being safe and respectful of others.

Thanks to Mr. Andy and Ms. Gigia for making pesto with our class last week. Children loved spending time in the garden, picking basil, making pesto, and eating! Our school is fortunate to be connected with Slow Food and we appreciate all they do. Be sure to check out the photos of our culinary adventure in the classroom.

We have been spending lots of time reinforcing safe and respectful behavior at school. Please be sure to have ongoing conversations with children about the importance of treating others the way they would like to be treated, respecting differences, and being understanding. An awareness of such things makes an enormous difference as we create the environment in which we will learn, play and explore in our classroom.

Children in Room 001 are becoming careful and thoughtful observers. Children are excited to make journals for our Bird Unit and have already started writing stories about birds at Writer’s Workshop. Earlier this week we read a book called Mole and Baby Bird, which sparked a discussion about whether children would keep a wild animal as a pet because they loved it or set it free for the same reason. Children enjoyed the book so much that they asked to reread it the next morning!

Our class has had some amazing discussions about books, writing, and the stories we have to share. Many children are already referring to themselves and their classmates as authors!

Thank you to all the families that have returned their policy forms, information forms, and letters about their children, I appreciate it. If you have not yet returned your information, please do so as soon as possible.

I have talked to many “former students” who have promised to come and read to the new class in Room 001. It's really cool to see first, second and even third graders come to share books and their excitement about learning. Of course, I just like a chance to visit with them as well.

I have posted the first parent letter for the upcoming school year and will provide a copy (with a policy form to sign) at the Ice Cream Social, which will be held sometime in mid-August. I'll post more specific information as soon as it's available. See you soon.

In early March I attended a great class on the art of bookmaking. It was taught by Jeannine West, an artist and teacher. We used recycled file folders, scraps of matte board, newspaper, crayons, liquid watercolors, string, and lots of glue to create both journal style and oragami books. Jeannine applied her philosphy that children learn best by doing to this class for adults and we all left convinced there really is no substitute. Thanks to Jeannine for sharing her time, humor, and expertise with us, especially on a Saturday morning.
