Balanced Literacy Components & Gradual Release of Responsibility

Keep in mind that there will be a lot of variation in this model depending on the skills/content being taught, as well as the level of each individual child across developmental areas. Children may be independent in some areas and not yet ready to apply skills independently in other areas. Each time new content, skills or strategies are introduced, the teacher initially takes more responsibility, gradually releasing it to students. Think about learning something new as an adult. Depending how difficult a given task is for you, along with factors such as time to practice, background knowledge or experience, someone modeling for you and a few others, will determine how you travel along the continuum.
