This work was an extension of the Video Magnifier developed during the dynamic document project. Instead of sampling still frames from a movie to create an overview, this technique took a spatial "slice" of a frame at particular intervals and stiched them together to create a kind of "smear" overview of the entire movie. The smear could then be "exploded" to show frames at a finer grain on a different hierarchical level.
