My first job after my master's was as part of a group of systems engineers at Bell Northern whose task was to investigate new forms of video telelphony. My job was to set up an experimental lab allowing the simulation of two-way audio-visual channels with different transmission and display properties. This turned out to be great fun as well as informative. We conducted controlled lab experiments on the effects of transmission bandwidth on cooperative problem-solving (having people in different rooms trying to assemble a kit of human anatomy where one person had the parts, the other had the instructions) to pure explorations (for example allowing someone remote control over a powerful pan/zoom camera during a remote video conversation),
