Radio-Frequency Luggage Identification in the Airport - Čipové označení zavazadel na letišti

In Las Vegas airport there has been for 19 months new luggage handling system. It is based of Radio-Frequency Identification, RFID. It is a tag with embedded chip which not only identifies the owner and the flight but also transmits a special identification code. When the bag is checked in at the airline ticket counter, it gets a normal looking tag with embedded chip. Then it proceeds on the conveyor belt through the station where the receivers read the bag's identification, put the information in the central database, direct it to the security screening and drop it to the appropriate airline collection area. From there the bags are loaded on the carts and driven to the airplanes. There is another RFID antenna at the loading conveyor belt which eliminates bags going on the wrong flight. Also, hand held receivers could identify bags already in the plane's cargo which need to be removed. RFID system works in Las Vegas very well. The airport handles 70,000 bags a day and only 1% of them are misplaced. The barcode system with scanners, which is used in most of the airports in the US and Europe, is only 80-90% accurate. In Las Vegas, before RFID, 7000 pieces of luggage had to be sorted out manually. The lost, misplaced and misdirected luggage costs airlines worldwide $760 million annually. With the smart tags this cost could be substantially reduced. The reason why only few airports use RFID system is the price. Barcode tags cost four cents a piece, the chip tag $1, although in Las Vegas it is currently 21 cents. I would gladly give up peanuts and Coke in the cabin for RFID.

Na letišti v Las Vegas už 19 měsíců funguje nový systém na identifikaci zavazadel. Jmenuje se RFID a je to čip v identifikační pásce, který má v paměti základní údaje o cestujícím, jeho letu, a zároveň je to miniaturní vysílačka, která vysílá speciální identifikační kod. U odbavení je zavazadlo opatřeno normálně vypadající páskou, v níž je zabudován čip. Běžící pás ho dopraví k bráně s přijímačkou, která data z čipu zaznamená v databázi. Odtud jde zavazadlo k bezpečnostní prohlídce a potom je nasměrováno do oddělení zavazadel příslušné aerolinie. Tady jsou zavazadla rozdělena podle příslušných letů, naložena na vozíky a odvezena k letadlům. Zde je kontrolní antena, která zajistí, aby se do letadla nedostala zavazadla, která sem nepatří. Naopak, když je třeba z nákladového prostoru nějaké vyjmout, najde se snadno pomocí ručního přístroje. RFID systém se v Las Vegas dobře osvědčil. Letištěm projde denně 70,000 zavazadel a jen v 1% se dostane na chybné místo. Naproti tomu barkodový systém, který se až dosud používá na většině letišť v USA a Evropě, má jen 80-90% spolehlivost. V případě Las Vegas by to znamenalo denně 7000 zavazadel, která se musí najít a ručně identifikovat. Ztracená a pozdě doručená zavazadla stojí aerolinie na celém světě ročně 760 milionů dolarů. S čipy by se tato částka dala podstatně snížit. Důvodem, proč se systém RFID ještě nerozšířil je cena. Barkodové označení stojí 4 centy za kus, čipová jmenovka 1dolar. V Las Vegas cena jmenovky klesla nyní na 21 centů. S radostí bych oželel buráky a Coke v kabině za RFID.

Eerie Scenery - Zvláštní scéna

In the morning we had 2 inches of snow on the ground and 30 degrees. The whole house was cold because we turned off the heating a week ago. After listening to the Czech Radio recordings we went for a walk. The scenery was almost eerie. The ground was dry, the clouds were dark and very low. It was black and white world with snow covering the trees and bushes. The views from the top were unique. There was the dark cloud ceiling reaching from where we stood to the middle of the Rio Grande Valley, about five miles from us. Then the darkness suddenly stopped, and as if the curtain opened the scene, there was the valley and the opposite mountains in bright sunshine. It was like in the theatre.

On the way home we admired the black and white scenery of houses, murky woods, snow bent rabbit bushes in absolute silence. Upon return, I postponed the breakfast, took the cameras and drove back to take the pictures. The fairy tale world lasted only few hours. Do rána napadlo pět centimetrů sněhu a mrzlo. Náš dům vychladl, protože jsme vypnuli topení už asi před týdnem. Po poslechu českého rozhlasu jsme šli na pravidelnou procházku. Scenérie byla nezvyklá, téměř pohádková. Země byla skoro suchá, bez sněhu a nad námi visely tmavé, nízké mraky. Z ponurého příšeří vystupovaly sněhem obsypané stromy a keře.t

Pohled z vrcholu našeho kopce do údolí byl naprosto unikátní. Nad námi byla klenba mraků sahající doprostřed údolí Rio Grande na vzdálenost tak osmi kilometrů. Potom náhle jako by se otevřela opona a údolí s horami na opačné straně se rozzářilo sluncem. Připadali jsme si jako v divadle. Cestou dolů jsme ještě míjeli černobílou scenérii domů, ponurých lesů, sněhem ohnutých keřů, a to všechno v naprostém tichu. Po návratu jsem odložil snídani, vzal kamery, sedl do auta a vratil se, abych si to vyfotografoval. Pohádkový svět vydržel jen pár hodin.

Blooming Amaryllis - Rozkvetlá Amaryllis

I already mentioned here that we received Amaryllis for Christmas 2005 from our kids in Seattle. The bulb, received in a pot, was supposed to grow immediately after watering, and bloom in 6 weeks. This never happened. So, Amaryllis was in the spring of 2006 removed from winter garden and put in the poor soil near the house for penitence. For several months it was sulking but around September it shot out several green leaves despite lack of watering except for rare rain. The green leaves prevented me from throwing Amaryllis in the garbage. With the first freeze in November, I transplanted Amaryllis in a big pot with good soil and put her back to winter garden where she was before. She started growing like crazy and by Christmas we could show Bob and Andrea that she wasn't a dud, as they thought. By March it was obvious that the prospering Amaryllis was going to become a mother. A strong green stem started growing rapidly from her middle and a week ago she gave birth to the first baby out of four. The bell like blossom was 8x7 inches, pink with white streaks. Today, three of the quadruplets are blooming. Little punishment makes miracles.

Už jsem se jednou tady na blogu zmínil, že na Vánoce 2005 jsme dostali od dětí ze Seattlu Amaryllis. Podle návodu měla v květináči začít růst hned a kvést do šesti týdnů. To se nestalo, takže za trest jsem ji na jaře vystrčil ven a zasadil cibuli do neúrodné země u domu. A nezaléval jsem ji. Několik měsíců se nic nedělo, ale v září vystrčila pár pěticentimetrových listů, přestože bylo sucho. Těch pár zelených listů mi zabránilo, abych ji nevyhodil do smetí. Když přišly první mrazy začátkem llistopadu, přesadil jsem Amaryllis do velkého květníku a do dobré, černé půdy. Vrátil jsem ji do zimní zahrady a ona začala růst jako blázen. Když Bob a Andrea přijeli na Vánoce, poznamenali, že to přece jen nebyl zmetek, jak si mysleli. Letos v březnu bylo jasné, že Amarylis se stane matkou. Z jejího lůna začal růst silný stvol a asi před týdnem rozkvetl první nádherný květ. Měří 20x17cm, je růžový s bílým žíháním. Dnes už máme tři květy, stejně krásné jako ten první. Za pár dní to budou čtyřčata. Mírný trest dělá zázraky.

New Vogue in Language - Nová môda v řeči

I hate current new vogue in phraseology which appeared in the language of politicians. It has become fashionable to say: "Quite frankly..","Honestly...." "In all honesty...", "To be honest with you..." Our politicians start with these words almost every other sentence.That degrades honesty and truth because, of course, they don't mean it. They just want to put emphasis on something and call attention to themselves. They don't care whether it's truth or not. It's obvious that such phrases are unnecessary because they are just crutches. Those who use them wouldn't dare to use the opposites and say:" In all dishonesty..." or "Quite deceptively..." In order to lie to you..." People should be honest about what they're saying and they should mean what they say.

Nenávidím novou môdu, která se tady objevuje v různých diskusích. Politici používají skoro v každé druhé větě fráze jako:" Docela otevřeně říkám...", "Poctivě řečeno....","Po pravdě řečeno..." "Abych nelhal...", a podobně. Je to degradace poctivosti a pravdivosti, neboť to tak nemyslí. Chtějí jenom něco zdůraznit, upoutat na sebe pozornost. Na tom, jestli to je pravda nebo lež už jim nezáleží. Je jasné, že podobné fráze jsou zbytečné, neboť to jsou berličky. Ti, kteří je používají by se jistě neodvážili říci:"S veškerou nepoctivostí tvrdím...", "Podvodně si dovolím poznamenat...", "Abych si zalhal...." Když se něco říká, má se mluvit pravda a má se to také tak myslet..

Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake - Čokoládový dort z kyselého zelí

When Jindra told me she heard about sauerkraut cake I thought she was kidding. Sweet and sour cake? To my surprise I found the recipe promptly in Sauerkraut Recipes.com The cake was sensational. It was light, moist and certainly not sour. The sauerkraut somehow disappeared. Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake ľ cup sauerkraut drained and chopped 1 ˝ cups sugar ˝ cup butter 3 eggs 1 tsp. pure vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda ˝ tsp. salt 1 cup water ˝ cup unsweetened cocoa powder Preheat oven to 350 degrees 1. Sift all dry ingredients together. Cream sugar, butter and vanilla. Beat eggs in one at a time. 2. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with water. 3. Add sauerkraut mix thoroughly. 4. Pour into greased pan or pans. 5. Bake 30 to 40 minutes until cake tests done. 6. Frost

Když mi Jindra řekla, že slyšela o dortu z kyselého zelí, myslel jsem si, že žertuje. Sladkokyselý dort? S překvapení, jsem skoro okamžitě našel recept na Sauerkraut Recipes.com Dort byl báječný. Byl lehký, vlhký a určitě ne kyselý. Kyselé zelí z něho nějak úplně zmizelo. Suroviny: 3/4 hrnku kyselého zelí zbavit vody procezením a vymačkat 1 1/2 hrnku cukru 1/2 hrnku másla 3 vejce 1 lžička vanilky 2 hrnky mouky na pečení 1 lžička prášku na pečení 1/2 lžičky jedlé sody 1 hrnek vody 1/2 hrnku kakaového, neslazeného prášku Trouba se předehřeje na 176 C Postup: Všwchny suché ingredience se smíchají a prosejí. Máslo, cukr a vanilka se utřou v míse. Vejce se ušlehají každé zvlášť. Postupně se přidávají do směsi suché ingredience a voda za stálého tření. Potom se přidá na kousky rozkrájené zelí a hmota se vyleje na vymaštěný pekáč a nebo do formy. Peče se 30 - 40 minut až je těsto hotové. Po upečení se dá dort do lednice vychladnout.

Pure Electric Car - Čistě elektrické auto

There will be a sleek electric car on the market this fall. It is made by Tesla Motors. The sports car, two-seat roadster, will be moved by electric motors receiving electric energy from 900 pounds of lithium-ion batteries. They can be recharged in 7 hours from standard power outlet, in half the time from 220-volt outlet. The battery is good for 500 charging and one charge will last for 250 miles. The car has top speed 130 miles per hour and goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4 seconds which is faster than Lamborghini Murcielago. Tesla Motors wants to sell 2,000 electric cars in two years. Each costs $100,000 and 350 people already made the payment.

Na americkém trhu se na podzim objeví sportovní, elektrické auto. Bude ho vyrábět firma Tesla Motors. Dvousedadlový roadster bude poháněn elektrickými motory a zdrojem elektrické energie budou velké, čtyřmetrákové lithiové baterie. Z běžné 110 voltové zástrčky bude trvat nabití 7 hodin, polovinu času z 220 voltového zdroje. Na jedno nabití auto ujede asi 400km a životnost baterie je na 500 nabití. Maximální rychlost je 210 km za hodinu. Z klidu dosáhne rychlosti 96km za hodinu za 4 vteřiny. Akceleruje rychleji než Lamborghini Murcielago. Tesla Motors chce za první dva roky vyrobit 2,000 těchto čistě electrických automobilů. Cena je zhruba 2 miliony Kč a už je zaplatilo 350 zájemců.

How Could I Survive in the Old Times? - Jak jsem mohl přežít ty staré zašlé časy?

I received a funny mail asking if I grew up in the 50s, 60s and how could I survive without Play Stations, Nintendo 64, video games, 99 TV channels, DVD, Dolby Surround, computers, cell phones and internet. Examples were cited of how then the lifestyle was simple and how happy the boys were without high tech toys. A question was asked:" How could we survive in such times, how could we grow our personalities in such primitive circumstances?" I say:"Easily. We took it as it came" I grew up in the 40s and 50s and survived happily in the environment I lived in. I played with the toys and used devices which had been available. I don't want to complain about the current young generation. They would be able to survive and adjust well to the times when I was growing up. In fact, it would be much harder for me. By the way, I enjoy the toys of the current generation and would have a hard time living without them.

Dostal jsem legrační a zároveň poučnou email s otázkou:" Jestli jsi vyrůstal v padesátých a nebo šedesátých letech, jak jsi mohl být bez Playstations, Nintenda 64, video games, 99 televizních kanálů, videa, Dolby Surround, počítačů, mobilních telefonů a internetu?" Odpovídám:" Docela snadno. Brali jsme to, jak to přišlo". Vyrůstal jsem ve čtyřicátých a padesátých letech a šťastně jsem to přežil v prostředí, které mě obklopovalo. Hrál jsem si s hračkami a používal vymoženosti, které byly tenkrát k disposici. Nechci si stěžovat pokud jde o současnou mladou generaci. Kdyby museli, přežili by v našich starých časech docela dobře a dokázali by se přizpůsobit. Bylo by to daleko těžší pro mne. Mimochodem, já nemám žádné potíže se přizpůsobit mladým lidem a naplno využívám jejich vymožeností. Ty jejich "hračky" by mi hodně chyběly.
