 When I was a student in medical school in Prague, a year or two before I started dating my wife, there were some girls, also medical students, who were objects of admiration for their beauty. They were considered adornment of the medical school not only because they were pretty but also because they were smart. They knew it and enjoyed our adulation. However, we, their peers, had no chance going out with them and had to be content with admiring looks. They played in different league and their boyfriends were finished doctors in important positions.
By a chance, two of them appeared as demonstrators in pathology department where I was also working in the same position, making some extra bucks by showing the younger students how to do autopsies. I occasionally met my colleagues in the hall or in the autopsy room, said "Hi" and exchanged few words. After graduation we each had gone our separate ways.
When we could travel to the old country after 1989, more than thirty years after the encounters, I went to see one of them, Vlasta, then the chief of Pathology Department of the 3rd. Medical School. We had a nice chat about the old times. I told her that I was one of her admirers and that I loved her raven-black hair and blue eyes. She was pleased and said:" Milan, sorry, but I hadn't noticed your attention... You want to know about the black hair which charmed you so much? They weren't mine. I had to dye them every week. In those days, the colors were terrible ".
The encounter with the second belle happened just recently over the radio. Terezka is now a well known Charles University Medical School professor and director of the Institute of Immunology. She is called the "First dame of Czech immunology". We listened to her on the Czech radio talking about her life story in the program "The Fates". When I heard the name I immediately knew who she was. I wrote her email and she promptly replied saying how delighted she was to hear from a colleague abroad. She didn't remember me at all.

 Když jsem byl studentem na lékařské fakultě v Praze - bylo to rok nebo dva než jsem začal chodit s Jindrou - byly mezi námi kolegyně, které jsme obdivovali. Byly ozdobou fakulty, protože byly nejen hezké, ale také chytré. Ony to věděly a náš obdiv jim dělal dobře. Avšak my, pouzí spolužáci, jsme neměli šanci a museli se spokojit s obdivnými pohledy. Hrály prostě v jiné lize a měly známosti už s hotovými lékaři.
Čirou náhodou se stalo, že dvě z nich přišly na pathologii jako demonstrátorky, kde já jsem v té době pracoval ve stejné funkci. Učil jsem mladší studenty pitvat a přilepšoval si pár stovkami měsíčně. Občas jsme se s pěknými kolegyněmi potkali na chodbě nebo při pitevním cvičení, pozdravili se a vyměnili pár slov. Po promoci jsme se rozešli každý svou cestou.
Když jsme se po víc jak třiceti letech mohli vrátit do Česka na návštěvu, zašel jsem za jednou z těch krasavic na fakultu. Vlasta byla šéfkou ústavu pathologie Lékařské fakulty na Vinohradech. Přijala mě vlídně a dobře jsme si popovídali o starých časech. Řekl jsem jí, že jsem byl jejím obdivovatelem pro její černé vlasy a modré oči. Líbilo se jí to a řekla:"Milane, bohužel jsem si toho nevšimla. Musím tě ale zklamat, protože ty černé vlasy, které tě tak okouzlily, nebyly moje. Musela jsem si je barvit každý týden. Ty barvy byly tenkrát hrozné."
Setkání s druhou kolegyní z pathologie se událo až letos, a to přes Český rozhlas. V Osudech tam vyprávěla o svém životě "První dáma české imunologie". Terezka je universitní profesorkou a ředitekou imunologického ústavu. Když jsem uslyšel její jméno, hned jsem věděl, kdo to je a poslal jí email. Obratem mi odpověděla, jak je ráda, že jí píše kolega z takové dálky. Vůbec se na mne nepamatovala.
