Today I discovered the first sign of the spring. Last three days we had sunny days with temperatures up to 50F and there are patches without snow around our house where the sun is strong and the ground warms up quickly. I deliberately planted some tulips, crocuses and daffodils there and they serve as spring indicators. I control these places every day when I close the gate and look for the green and yellow tips in the ground. They come to the surface from the bulbs which are 6" deep. How do they know that it's getting warmer when they are so deep and 3 days ago the ground was still under snow? They must have heat sensors near the surface to send the information to the bulb that it's time to wake up and start growing. There will be stop and go several times before they bloom in April. The snow and sun will play hide and seek with them for another month.
It's not early to see the first shoots. The record is January 26 but I forgot the year.
Dnes jsem našel u domu první známky jara. Máme už tři dny za sebou slunečné a teplé dny s teplotami kolem 10C. Na několika místech obrácených ke slunci se rozpustil sníh a země prohřála. Už dávno jsem tady zasázel tulipány, krokusy a narcisky jako indikátory jara. Vždycky ta místa kontroluji, když jdu zavřít bránu a hledám první nepatrné zelené a žluté špičky, které vyrážejí z cibulí z hloubky 15cm. Jak se ty cibule dozví, že mají začít rašit, když ještě před třemi dny bylo místo pokryté sněhem? Musí mít u povrchu nějaká čidla, která tu informaci o oteplení pošlou cibulce a ta vyklíčí. Do začátku dubna, kdy rozkvetou, se růst ještě několikrát zastaví. Slunce a sníh si s našimi jarními květinami budou hrát na schovávanou ještě dobrý měsíc.
Není to tak brzo vidět první posly jara. Rekord je 26tého ledna, ale rok si nepamatuji. |
