With burning of Zozobra, Old Man Gloom, starts the Fiesta weekend in Santa Fe. Zozobra is a giant, 50-feet tall marionette monster which is made of wooden stick skeleton surrounded by chicken wire and painted muslin cloth. It is stuffed with shredded paper from city offices. Zozobra gives the impression of a dull, stupid man with big mouth, thick, red lips, bow tie and long shirt with broad belt in the waist. Like a puppet, it moves his head, mouth, eyes and flails its arms. It groans and moans when it is ablaze because it's supposed to represent anxiety, fear, doom and gloom.Thousands of spectators roar "Burn him, burn him", believing that Zozobra's flames will destroy all bad and will purify their lives and erase sins.

Burning of Zozobra started in Santa Fe in 1926 by local artist Howard Schuster. This year's Zozobra burning takes place under rainy skies. I went to see the raising of Zozobra from the truck by the crane in the morning. The field was already filled with school children and campers waiting for the night show. At this hour, it looks like the Zozobra burning will be wet with lightening in the background.

Pálení Zozobry, kterým začíná Fiesta weekend v Santa Fe, je pohanský obřad. Zozobra je gigantická, 15 metrů vysoká loutka v dlouhé bílé košili, znázorňující přihlouplého muže s velkými ústy a tlustými rty, motýlkem kolem krku a hlouhými, červenými nehty na rukou. Loutka pohybuje hlavou, otevírá ústa, koulí očima a mává rukama a vyluzuje naříkavé zvuky. Má představovat strach, úzkost a obavy. Když hoří, lidé skandují "Spalte ho, spalte ho", věříce, že se spálenou Zozobrou shoří také jejich starosti.

| Pálení Zozobry začal místní umělec Howard Schuster v roce 1926. Obřad se koná na travnatém hřišti a od rána tu jsou školní děti, které se přišly podívat na Zozobru. Na pokrývkách tu táboří celé rodiny, večer přijdou tisíce diváků.Letos se bude pálení Zozobry konat pod deštivým nebem. Šel jsem se ráno podívat, když Zozobru přivezli na obrovském podvozku a pak postavili. Teď večer to vypadá tak, že Zozobra bude hořet v dešti s blesky v pozadí. |
