 I heard this morning that there were actually more white slaves in North Africa than black slaves shipped to North America from the Central Africa. I looked up "slave" and found the definition that it's a person who is held in bondage to another, who is subject to the will of another and who has no freedom of action.
I was surprised that the word "Slave" is close to "Slav". They are historically identical and mean the same thing.
The English word "slave' originated in Greek "sklabos" and appeared in 6th century. In the 9th centuries the Slavs became slaves of Germans who conquered the Slav territory, current Eastern Europe. The slaves of the old Europe were Slavs. There were no black slaves either in Europe or North Africa.
The more than a million of white slaves in Marocco, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli were originally Crusaders and pilgrims to Holy Land (1095-1295) captured by Muslim pirates. Later they were called Barbary States after their leader Khair ad Din who was called Barbarossa because of his red beard. So, Barbars were Muslim pirates who took Christians in slavery. Terrorists of our times are called barbars for good reason.
I never knew, why is in the US Marine Hymn an invocation "To the Shores of Tripoli". It was because in 1805 Marines stormed the Barbary pirates' fortress in Tripoli (then Derma) and defeated them.
Also, I didn't know why the Marine officers carry scimitar, a curved turkish sword. It's in memory of Marine Lieutenant O'Bannon who was given the sword in appreciation by a desert chieftain. It is also called Mameluke sword after Mameluke warriors of North Africa who were originally slaves brought to Egypt and became Egyptian leading class and officers.
I have no idea why the word "mameluke" in Czech language means an idiot.

 Dnes rano jsem slysel v jednom poradu, ze v severni Africe bylo vice bilych otroku nez cernych otroku ve stredni Africe, kteri byli odvezeni do severni Ameriky. To me podnitilo, abych se podival na puvod slova "otrok". K velkemu prekvapeni jsem zjistil, ze otrok (slave) je historicky identicky se Slovanem (slav).
Otrok je definovan jako osoba, ktera je drzena v zajeti u nekoho jineho, podleha jeho vuli a nema svobodu delat, co by chtela.
Puvod anglickeho "slave" je v reckem "sklabos" a prvne se objevilo v 6. stoleti. Jelikoz ale v 9. stoleti si Nemci podmanili cast slovanskeho uzemi, dnesni vychodni Evropu, privedli si odtud zajatce, Slovany, udelali z nich otroky a rikali jim "Slavs". V Evrope proto nebyli zadni cerni otroci, jen bili.
Stejne tak v Maroku, Alziru, Tunisu a Lybii-Tripoli bylo pres milion bilych otroku, coz byli krizaci a poutnici do Svate Zeme z obdobi krizackych valek (1095-1295). Chytili je moslemsti pirati. Pozdeji se jim rikalo Barbari podle toho, ze jejich vudce Khair ad Din mel rudy plnovous a rikalo se mu Barbarossa. Teroristum se tedy rika barbari z dobreho duvodu.
Take jsem nevedel, proc se v hymne americkych Marinaku zpiva o "brezich Tripoli".Je to proto, ze tu Barbari byli Marinaky porazeni v roce 1805. V souvislosti s touto bitvou se vyskytuje v cestine hanlive slovo "Mameluk". Vsichni dustojnici a poddustojnici v Marine totiz nosi zakroucenou tureckou savli. Touto savli obdaroval porucika O'Bannona z vdecnosti nejaky poustni pasa, ktery patril k Mamelukum, a proto se ji dodnes rika mamelucka savle.
Mameluci tedy nebyli zrejme zadni hlupaci. Prisli do Egypta a severni Afriky jako otroci z Turecka a stredni Asie a vypracovali se na vladnouci tridu a na dustojniky.
Nekdo by mi mel vysvetlit, jak Cesi udelali z Mameluka pitomce.
