Cost in the Context of College Education
Two of the most important factors in college admission committees' decision-making are, in order, grades and standardized test scores (in particular, SATs and ACTs). Consequently, by focusing on students' academic performance and on raising their scores as high as possible, CollegePrepExpress targets precisely what impresses college admissions committees most: good grades and high scores.

For example, one high school student came during the spring semester, having received a string of C's and D's in his math class since September; with two sessions per week for eight weeks, we were able to help this student catch up on material he found challenging and to show him how best to study for his final exam. He scored in the high 90s (that's right, high 90s) on that exam and ended the year with a B. Similarly, another student who dreamed of going to Yale and who had worked hard to earn good grades throughout high school was concerned that her SAT scores might prevent her from getting in; she made a commitment to come once a week for six months before her junior year SATs and to study hard between sessions, and she scored in the mid-1400s (on the old 1600 scale) on her first try (most students take the SATs twice, once junior year and once in the fall of their senior year). She now resides in New Haven! (See Katie's student feedback on the Results page.)

Most private colleges these days cost $30,000 and up per year. For 1% of the four-year investment, you could purchase 16 1-hr. sessions with CollegePrepExpress. For 2.5%, you could get a 40-pack, which would amply provide for highly personalized academic help, standardized test preparation, and college application consultation and assistance. Given that grades and standardized test scores count so much in the admissions process, that 1% or 2% investment could easily mean a significantly different choice of schools, and consequently, significantly different choices upon graduation.

Compare and Save
There is an abundance of private tutors and standardized test prep centers today. Unfortunately, many are either under-qualified or play on the fears and insecurities of college-bound students and their parents. Many private tutors charge upwards of $150/hr. without opportunities for savings for students who come regularly or for families sending more than one child. Big-name test prep centers offer classes that do not cater to the individual needs of their students, often taught by young and inexperienced teachers. And none that we've seen or heard about has the kind of track record of success or personal testimonials (see Results) that CollegePrepExpress has.

Take, for instance, IvyWise (see www.ivywise.com), a private tutoring and college application preparation company, written up in New York Magazine (April 16, 2001). The Founder and Director of that operation is a Yale graduate with a doctorate in literature. Ours is a Harvard graduate with a doctorate in education. The relevant work experience of theirs is two years on the Yale undergraduate admissions committee. Ours is 20 years of classroom teaching and tutoring experience, including extensive college counseling. Their track record of success is no better, and arguably considerably worse, than ours (based on the published score increases in a number of periodicals, readily available on their website). Indeed, the biggest difference lies in the price of services. One hour of private "consultation" at IvyWise (what we call tutoring) runs $300-$1000. According to the New York Magazine article, their "'platinum package,' which includes 24 sessions and an hour of phone time per week, typically spread over junior and senior year, costs $28,995" (p.34). That is not a misprint, and it WAS the price in 2001! It's no wonder prices are not listed on their website. Our comparable package would run in the $3,000 to $4,000 range. Similarly, their college application review, which takes two to three hours, costs $1000. Two to three hours of our time would cost between $200 and $300.

Similarly, CollegePrepExpress's SAT prep class costs about the same as Stanley Kaplan's and Princeton Review's, both of which are only as good as the given instructor. At CollegePrepExpress, you are guaranteed a professional educator with 20 years' experience and a Ph.D. in Secondary Education!

See the May 29, 2009 article in the Hartford Courant, in which Kaplan's in-home tutors are sited as costing more than DOUBLE those of CollegePrepExpress! The article reports that private, one-on-one tutoring STARTS at $165/hr with a MINIMUM purchase of 20 hrs!

For extra savings, consider the new GUIDED SELF-STUDY plan--a complete and rigorous course of study for only $250!
