8-Session Study Skills Workshop (20 hours) - Brochure for download or print

Raise your grades, learn how to learn in high school and college, and get your work done all at the same time by taking this class! Students will meet once per week for 8 weeks to learn to 1) effectively organize their papers and electronic documents; 2) take useful notes for tests and papers; 3) study time-efficiently for quizzes, tests, and exams; 4) plan and write first-rate essays; and 5) produce top notch multi-media projects. Skills covered include: active reading, effective note-taking techniques, test-studying and test-taking techniques, brainstorming, outlining and proofing skills, memorization techniques, building historical frameworks, and organization and time management skills.

Each 2.5 hr class is designed to kill two birds with one stone. Each week during the first hour, a different study skill will be presented and demonstrated.  After a short break, students will practice these essential skills by completing assignments for their current school classes!

This class is for you if you answer "yes" to any of the following questions:
  • Are you tired of earning grades below your potential despite trying really hard?
  • Do teachers ever say that you’re disorganized or unprepared for class?
  • Do you wait to the last minute or not know how to go about studying for tests, conceiving and writing a paper, or getting started with other school projects?
  • Have you ever studied really hard for a test or worked really hard on a paper, only to be disappointed and frustrated with your grade?
  • Do you have one particular class that always gives you trouble or for which you frequently find yourself procrastinating?

3-Session PSAT Prep Class (7.5 hours)

Enrolled Students: Click here to enter the password-protected download area.

CollegePrepExpress's PSAT Prep Class meets three times between Labor Day and the PSATs (early Oct), to introduce students to the PSAT/SAT format, essential strategies, and the finite body of mathematical, vocabulary, and grammatical material tested on the exam. We waste no time having students take practice tests during valuable class time: they do that outside of class. All our time is devoted to focused learning!

Classes meet in students' schools or at the home of one of the participants and have no more than 15 students. Each class lasts last two and a half hours and affords students the kind of close personal attention given in private tutoring sessions, with the added pedagogical benefits that only small classes can provide. To help stay focused and motivated, students receive via email during the week typed notes on the material presented in each class (also available in the private download section of this site), containing vocab, math content, grammar rules, strategies, and examples.

coverMaterials: Students need to purchase The College Board’s The Official SAT Study Guide, the best source of practice, available in most bookstores that carry standardized test prep books, as well as Princeton Review’s Word Smart (the best PSAT/SAT prep vocab text). Participants can get a head start by reading/studying the review sections in The Official SAT Guide and studying the word lists in Word Smart, but they should not start taking the practice tests until the course starts. Students should bring the following to every class: their text books, notebooks with plenty of blank paper, a calculator, a pen, and a #2 pencil.

CollegePrepExpress's SAT Prep Class is offered in two formats before each of the three major test administrations (fall, winter, & spring) each year: a 9-week format that meets once a week and a 4-week format that meets twice a week. The curriculum and class procedures are the same in both formats (see below). We waste no time having students take practice tests during valuable class time: they do that outside of class. All our time is devoted to focused learning!

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Intense 9-week (meeting once a week) and 4-week (meeting twice a week) SAT classes are offered in preparation for each of the three major annual test administrations (fall, winter, and spring). Classes meet in students' schools or at the home of one of the participants and have no more than 15 students each.

Students should bring the following to every class: their text books, notebooks with plenty of blank paper, a calculator, a pen, and a #2 pencil.

Class Structure & Outline: In the first class, we discuss what the SAT does and does not measure, the format of the exam, how best to prepare over the next two months, and set and commit to our study goals in writing. Each week thereafter, we begin with a half-hour presentation of material, studying the featured topics of the week (see below), followed by vocab, math, and writing skills building. For the remainder of each session, we go over the practice test due for homework.

"Thank you for getting my girls into the groove for the SAT's. As always you did a great job with the material, but more important, you keep on showing all your students that learning can be fun and even having a tutor can be a blast."
-Dr. Steve Y, parent

"We're still in a celebratory mood at the Lewis household.  I can't thank you enough for working with Caroline.  In addition to knowing how to tutor her to do the best she possibly could, you motivated her to study and made the classes fun.... Many thanks and I only wish you were here to witness Caroline's reaction when she saw her scores. "
-Janet Lewis, parent

"I just want to let you know that your class really helped me and I felt much more comfortable than I thought I'd feel.  The essay wound up being the same exact essay as some of the sample essays in the Practice Book about honesty.  Pretty funny, huh? Anyway, I recognized almost all the words, the I didn't feel struggled with the math at all.  Right after the test, my head felt like it was spinning, but it was still a great feeling.  Your class was a great help and a lot of fun, and I'm definitely making sure my brother takes the class next year."
-Shlomo G., student

"Hi Dr. Yo! I just got my ACT scores online, (drumroll... haha) 31 composite, with 26 in science, 30 in math, 32 in reading, and 35 in English!!! Just wanted to thank you for helping me so much.... [Several months later:] you really helped me and I couldn't have done any of it without you! And now for some exciting news: I was accepted at McGill, Maryland Honor's Program, and got a $25,000 scholarship at Case Western!!! (I'm still waiting on Emory and Michigan). I really really appreciate all the time, effort, and care that you put into helping me. You've been a wonderful role model and mentor, and always had the best advice on approaching anything."
