good grief, is it really 10 years....?!

hey folks, yet more screen culture for you today....

Did you know (bet you didn't, and quite rightly you don't care either) that the end of this month marks the 10th anniversary of the TeleTubbies... yep, 10 years of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po.....
There are only a couple of things of note in my memory bank about these guys... Tinky Winky (or rather his original actor Dave Thompson) got in trouble in 1997 and was subsequently sacked apparently for being just a bit too camp in his portrayal of the little purple guy... It had something to do with the way he (it?) carried it's handbag... (officially known as a Magic Bag) though Dave claiming in the media that Tinky Winky was in fact gay probably didn't help matters.... The only other item of value as far as I'm concerned are the memories of all those dodgy Teletubby costumes at University fancy dress parties...
Now, I've been doing a bit of research and it seems that, as usual, our American cousins are taking things just a little too far with respect to marking this Teletubby milestone.... here's a short list of what they're up to:
• The Teletubbies will appear in the United States for the first time. They will make appearances in New York City's Times Square, Grand Central Station, and Apollo Theater.
• A partnership was formed with Isaac Mizrahi in which Isaac will design Teletubbies-inspired bags to be auctioned off to benefit the Cure Autism Now and Autism Speaks charities.
• A Pop-Up Shop will be opened in New York City's West Village from March 28 to April 7, 2007. The opening night party will be DJ'ed by MisShapes. • A new line of clothing will be launched to be sold in the Pop-Up Shop and other specialty stores.
• New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg will announce March 28, 2007 "Teletubbies Day" and will give the key to the city to the Teletubbies.

Typical, they always have to everything bigger but not necessarily better. I wonder if the BBC will even bother to screen a 'Best Of' moments... That might be a bit dry, it certainly wouldn't need to be very long, typically best moments were repeated every show and only went so far as tossing a ball, making tubbytoast and, ermmm, well - that's it. It's certainly not a show blessed with a memorable dialogue..... There may be more but I couldn't possibly reveal them as you'd start wondering just how I know so much about the weird but cuddly little guys..........
