banana pancakes....

a nicer memory than a Timorese dog curry....

There's not a lot of point to this post really (but is there ever?) but I just wanted to share a memory this morning.... Years ago while following my nose all over Asia the staple breakfast for the wandering westerner , if it wasn't spicy noodles or rice, was the banana pancake. Banana pancakes served in the humid cool of a tropical dawn are one of my most enduring memories (so are geckos but that's another story)... I hadn't eaten one since (a pancake, not a gecko), my travels have taken me elsewhere (mostly to places where curry-something is more common first thing), until this morning that is... With some left over Juwar (Sorghum) flour batter in the fridge I had sudden inspiration and happily relived those days of adventure. Only thing missing was the cockroaches... :o).
Food, or food smells, bring back the some powerful and otherwise forgotten memories of travelling. Some are pleasant, like thick cardamom-rich chai after a tough day on the bike in India, or fresh sardines grilling over charcoal on a still Portuguese evening.... Others though are best left forgotten, except they're unforgettable - chunks of boiled buffalo liver in a broth on the Lao/China border or stringy dog curry in Timor.... hmmm. Bugs straight from the wok in Cambodia though - yum, better than boring old salt and vinegar crisps...

OK, talking of smells.. fresh coffee (brought back from Italy no less) is wafting up from downstairs so I'm off for a brew!
Have a nice day ;o)
