so just what do they teach...?
just bear with me will ya, you can
always point your browser somewhere else!)
I'll apologise in advance, I'm afraid I'm dragging
out my old soapbox again.... (yeah, yeah, I can hear the groans from here in
darkest Kernow... just bear with me will ya, you can always point your browser
somewhere else!). I have to own up to being something of a cycling nut (like you
hadn't figured that already), so this morning over a cup of coffee before
heading out on a training ride I had a flick through one of my favourite cycling
forums, one populated primarily by the knobby-tyred fraternity (that's mountain
bikers to the un-enlightened), One topic , which was very much off-topic, caught
my eye... it was a genuine question.... "so why is the sea salty when rivers and
lakes aren't...?"!!
I couldn't believe it, what
happened to basic science and geography at school? When I was a lad.... blah,
blah, blah.... (you've heard it all before no doubt) school was a place for
actually learning about stuff... It's probably been replaced with "media
studies", "Sony Playstation 101" and "Football Heroes" given the importance this
bloody society seems to attach to such stuff. Having said that, it doesn't quite
beat the guy I know (unfortunately an acquaintance of mine), not particularly
well-endowed in the intelligence department, who honestly thought lightening (as
in thunderstorms) came from space..... somehow he'd never quite made the
connection with nasty big clouds, heavy rain and booming thunder.... knowing him
though he was probably having a puff behind the bike sheds when that was taught
- if he was at school at all.
I'll give my
trusty, rusty old pedestal a rest though by not mentioning spelling.... but
aside from the newspapers and evil spell-checking software I am fed up with
buying "break pads" for my bike off eBay when I'd really rather have good old
brake pads.......
